Zika and honeymoon

Michael, on January 10, 2017 at 2:34 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 35

My Fiancée and I are getting married June 17, 2017 and we are starting to figure out our honeymoon plans. She is really worried about this whole Zika virus thing and most of the places that we have looked are in the Caribbean or Mexico. We will be on birth control at that time so not planning on getting pregnant though we'd rather not have to bring condoms with us either. Any advice on what to do or would we be ok and not have to worry about anything.

Also we have a budget of about $3000-$3500 so any ideas in which we could make that money go the furthest would be great too.

If you're taking measures to not get pregnant in the next year, there's nothing to worry about.

Talk to your doctor. My doctor suggested we not travel to any of the Zika places, especially if you plan to get pregnant within a year (we are actively trying).

Not sure if this will help you at all. I travel for work and Mexico is a place I went to 9 times last year and I also went to DR and Jamaica. Zika was a concern for me, however, I have been bit ONE time last year. I might also add I work at the all inclusive resorts that most people travel to on their HM so I am in the area where you may be planning to go, I bring bug spray and make sure I never leave the room without it on and even spray some on before bed. I take no chances. But with that being said, many people assume with Zika there is just a million mosquitos everywhere and it really isn't the case. I would say just plan your honeymoon and enjoy yourselves. Zika is in a lot of places- not just Caribbean or Mexico.

We aren't (as of now) planning on trying to get pregnant for at least 1 1/2 -2 years if not longer.

We'd also wanted to know is it ok to just use other forms not condoms ( she's gone get the implant). We'd rather not have to take all that on the honeymoon.

Lol! Were you planning on buying a Costco-sized box of rubbers? They don't take up that much space.

You would rather not take your condoms on the honeymoon? Why, because they're so hard to pack? Please talk to a doctor and get a backup method because you are not ready to procreate.

My friends just got back from their honeymoon in Cancun, their doctor told them to just wait 6months after getting back to try. Since you're waiting for at least a year in half you guys should be fine!

Also, if you do decide to travel in these areas Cancun has awesome all inclusive hotels. All the food and alcohol you can drink included in the price! For our honeymoon the flight and hotel for 8 nights cost around $3,000.00 at Paradisus Cancun (this is one of the all inclusive hotels). We're flying from WA state so depending on where you're from the price could be cheaper.

    Good luck!

Are you doubting the effectiveness of the implant?

I feel like that reason, being too much too pack, is just an excuse because you really dont want to use condoms.

I'm like the others.. A bit confused.. This went from a zika fear and HM question which I got, to BC? .. As for zika, I agree with Stephanie N. Make sure to use lots of bug spray anywhere!! And as for bc? Continue doing what you are now. A few (or box) won't take up much room in a suitcase. If you still don't want to take it for some reason of your own, if she's covered you might be ok.. Might. Think about if you really want to chance it.

Well- from what I understand- zika's really only an issue if you are trying to get pregnant- so if you aren't trying to get pregnant- it doesn't matter if you get bit.

So in that regard- I get the jump- but I feel like I'm missing something.

Zika is considered a sexually transmitted disease by WHO.

WHO is telling people to use condoms in Zika infected areas. There are lots of different types if you need to figure out what kind you like best.

I just went to the doctors yesterday and she found out I was engaged and her first question was to me (and I'm not trying) you're not going anywhere with Zika for your honeymoon right? Talk to your doctor about it and your particular situation to make a decision. Bermuda is zika free right now and has that carribean feel

For couples who are on a hormonal birth control method when being in a Zika country are condoms really necessary if you are not planning on having kids? That's my first question

Other question are the all inclusives there doing. Bugs to keep the mosquitoes away. Aside from using a ton of bug spray everyday( is that annoying) or not what is it like.

The virus would last in you longer than her. It can stay in the sperm for 6months (which is why the recommend the extra precautions for that long IF contracting it). My husband and I went on a cruise in the Caribbean, I got bit twice while in Puerto Rico (at least that's where I'm assuming since I didn't notice it until the next day in Haiti and it was the previous stop), and I never contracted the virus. If you don't plan on having kids within 6 months, you're good (even though the virus has only been shown to have the birth defects in that one area where all the hype is around it). Also, if you're that concerned just take bug spray with you so you don't get bit. That's how one would normally go about not getting bit by mosquitos which is the only thing carrying it.
