Would this be weird?

Rosebud, on June 15, 2022 at 8:48 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 16

I very recently lost a family member who was like a dad to me. Experiencing life's saddest moments at the same time as the most joyful has been incredibly hard but in some ways a blessing. It shatters me knowing he won't be at the wedding but I know how incredibly happy he was for us. I want to do something to honor him at the wedding but I also don't want it to make me extra sad. Originally we were thinking of a table with photos of all the people who we ve lost and couldn't be there but now I m 2nd guessing that idea. This might sound silly but ever since I was kid my mom would tell me to look for cardinals when someone passes, she said a cardinal represented a lost love visiting you. The day after he died I went for a walk and a beautiful cardinal flew down and just sat in front of me. It was the sweetest moment. So my mom had an idea of just placing a little cardinal somewhere at the wedding venue to represent all our lost loved ones stopping by for a little visit. I don't think I d make a sign or put photos or anything to draw attention to it. Would that be strange?

Not strange at all! I’ve heard the same thing about cardinals and I think it’ll be a great way to honor him. Something that wouldn’t make you too emotional but still be happy to celebrate him. I really like the second one.

I think the cardinal thing is VERY common, as my mom says the same thing!

I think it's a nice subtle nod to those you've lost.

Thank you! I actually gifted the 2nd one to his wife, she's already said we can use it but I think I may buy one for us to keep too. He and I had a thing with rainbows, after every storm he d go out and look for a rainbow and then text me the photos. I have hundreds of these photos makes me smile to look at them I may also add a little rainbow charm to my bouquet. His wife had a little nod to the rainbows at his service it made me cry instantly not many people knew what it meant but I did. Open to other memorial ideas if anyone has any. Grief is such a strange thing it can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Thank you! My fiance had never heard of the cardinal thing and when we were walking that day and saw the cardinal I froze in my spot and burst into tears, he thought I d been stung by a bee. He googled it though and apparently it is a pretty common thing. After seeing the cardinal I immediately texted my mom and his wife, that week multiple family members had cardinal sightings some in very unexpected place like the beach! Makes me smile whenever I hear someone has seen one. Smiley smile

We had a cardinal just hanging out in a tree in our back yard the other day, and my fiance and I were trying to figure out "who" it was and which one of us it was for, when we realized it was the 8th anniversary of his uncles (who's also his godfather) death so we came to the conclusion it was him. He just sat there staring at us for like an hour!

I think this is a lovely idea. We did a photo and flowers around it to represent Fiancés Dad. He loved it. I think you can be creative with this and there are no rules.

This is so true. Sometimes you feel like you’re okay and something can remind you of that person and you find yourself breaking down crying. Here is something we might do, still debating. Would this be weird? 3

Thanks Sloane, that sounds like a lovely tribute Smiley heart I m not at a point yet where I can look at photos and not ugly cry, his death has been kind of traumatic for me (and the fam) so its hard to find the right balance if that makes any sense.

Oooh that's so cute, I ve never seen that before. I have seen people leave an actual chair empty with flowers and I think that's so beautiful and touching but I know it would be way too hard of a reminder for me. The miniatures are adorable though. Thank you for sharing.

I like the cardinal idea! Some people have taken a small photo in a sort of locket and wind it in their bouquet subtly.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. The cardinal is great because the symbolism is there without it feeling like a funeral. Even if with the best of intentions, not everyone is over the loss and a memorial table can dampen the mood. Another option is a photo in a locket on your bouquet.
