Why am i on Google Images? Wedding Website Venting

Jessica, on April 7, 2019 at 10:26 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24
Hi all brides and brides to be. So me and my fh were sitting on the couch yesterday and he asked what's the knot and I replied its a wedding planning app and then he said why is my picture all over google images. Not sure why he was looking himself up in there but whatever. I said I don't know, I have the wedding website on there but im not sure why our photos went to the images part. He was very upset because he doesn't want people looking him up and seeing his pictures posted in there. He told me to take care of it. Then kept saying it a few more times after that. Which I didnt know it would post to images I thought it would just be in the regular search engine for people who needed help with info in the wedding. Im extremely mad the knot never had anything saying it's going on Google Images. I deleted the pictures in the website and asked google to remove it on there as well. Im so upset I wish I would have known.

Any photo you put on the Internet is going to go to Google images. Public social media pages, if you have a work website with staff photos, etc. So you were fine with people being able to find your website which, in turn, would lead them to your photos, but not the fact that they can find your photos on Google images?

My FH wasn't to thrilled they were on google images. He said he worked so hard making sure he didn't have his photos on there until this. I didn't think it mattered but he did and that was an argument waiting to happen and I didn't want it to happen.

What Caytlyn said is true, most photos posted in a searchable site will show up in google images, the best options is to make your site hidden so it won’t show up on search results.

I would talk with you Fiance about the wedding website and what you are both okay with having up there. Even if a website is private / no searchable there’s still a chance something made get through to google. Maybe there’s one or two pictures he’s okay with if they pop up on google images? Maybe you just skip the pictures Smiley smile

If you want a private wedding website here’s some starting tips for getting a private one up and running:

Did you not discuss having a wedding website with him before setting it up?

Google can pretty much index any site on the internet. This would include your wedding website so it’s not super surprising your images would come up if you Googled your names - especially if they are less common names or you included words on the site (like ceremony location or something) in your search. Maybe have pictures where your faces aren’t shown like close ups of your ring or skip the photos all together. Maybe also remove your last names from the site and make it password protected if you would like to make it a bit more private.

You take that risk when you post any picture on the internet.

This depends on your privacy settings. If you’re posting photo on FB under “public” setting or on IG (unless your account is set to private), all photos will show up in Google images. How high they show up (meaning are they on 1st or on 20th page, where nobody will likely see them) depends on how common your name is & how your post is ranked based on number of likes, shares, etc. This is how social media works! When you open an account, you’re signing that you accept these terms.

With wedding website, it’s the same. If you set your site to public - it will be PUBLIC. That’s what the word public means. If you set it to private & provide access code to your guests only, then it won’t show up in Google images, and only the link to your website will show in Google search (if someone searches for your names). Many wedding websites also have option to make only certain pages hidden / private, so you can do that for your Photos page. Or post no photos.

This is a very mainstream situation, so you shouldn’t be upset with Knot or Google lol. Next time, it’s probably a good idea to read all terms & conditions of a site before you decide to use it, if you’re not familiar with these standard practices.

If any of your social media are private they will not show on google. You can have your wedding website private. Just make sure guest know the password.
Heada up on the wedding pictures because you’ll not have control over that and they’ll be on google. Photographers own the rights to photos and they often post it on social media, blogs and other sites that are all completely public.

You can click on your profile and also see photos of your fiancé on here as well. Is he okay with that?

He knew about wedding websites but I did not tell him about ours but I didn't know about it going on both images and website part. I was under the impression it was just the regular not both.

Thank you for the advise but he wants to photos completely gone off google. He wasn't to upset when I said I didn't know it would go on both parts on google. And I changed it so it's not visible on search engines but I'm not sure if the deed is done. Because even if our wedding is done I'd delete our website and I wouldn't want it on there anyways.

There are no two separate parts of Google! Images & search results are one of the same, it’s all part of Google search engine. What’s posted as public will go on both. What’s posted as private will not go on either, besides a link to your website that people will not be able to access, if they click on it.

Any picture you put up of yourself online can be found. I don't care how secure a website is nothing is 100% safe. Anyone can get an api (most are free) either legally or illegally and write a script to find pictures. That's why people say if you don't want it out on the internet, never upload it. When you use a social media account. You agree to a lot of this stuff under your terms of service. No one ever reads it. I can use Twitter's api to scrap their site to gather every tweet that a specific person created if I wanted to. And is 100% free and 100% legal.

Even if you delete your account the pictures won't be gone. There is no such thing as "deleted" when it comes to technology. It's still archived somewhere.

This right here. While I have posted pictures of myself a few times there's a reason I don't have a profile pic.

I didn't know they weren't 2 seperate search engines. So that was my mistake.
