Which dress code should i put?

Jasmine S., on January 4, 2022 at 7:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 10
My wedding is 4 months away and I've recently had a lot of people ask me what they should wear. I didn't think I had to provide this information because most people have been to weddings and other formal events before. I decided I have to put it on the website, but I'm not sure which language is best: cocktail, semi-formal, or something else.
It is not black tie. Long or short dresses, jumpsuits, or suits are all fine as long as it looks dressed up. I was thinking "semi-formal," but I read somewhere that semi-formal is the same as business casual/dressy casual and our event would be a step or two up from that. So not sure what to say?

Sounds like you are leaning towards “cocktail”.

I wrote “cocktail/semi-formal” on my wedding website and if anyone asked in person I just said that I was hoping men would wear jackets or suits as far as a formality level. Truth is, I never noticed what people were wearing day of. Hah.
They are only asking in case there is something specific you want like formal, no certain colors, casual, or suggested shoes (if your venue has lots of grass or gravel for example).

I agree with the previous comments - I would list cocktail attire.

I also agree. I'm not sure if this is just where I live, but people tend to dress down from what the invite says, so I'd put cocktail to ensure people don't get confused and turn up looking more casually than you'd like.

Cocktail attire is standard for most late afternoon/evening weddings, so when I get a wedding invitation, I assume it’s cocktail attire unless it says otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm going with cocktail (which is what I wanted, but one of my friends said she doesn't know what that means 🤦🏼‍♀️)

I agree with the others. Cocktail attire sounds best for what you are describing

I was invited to a wedding that said “Fancy cocktail” as the attire. I thought that worked and might use it for my own!
