Where to honeymoon during hurricane season?!

Anonymous, on February 19, 2012 at 3:06 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 24

With our wedding being September 8th and us wanting to leave for our honeymoon around the 10th of September - we feel limited as to where we can book a trip in the Caribbean considering hurricane season is June 1- December 1. And the worst time is August and September.

I'm curious if this is a concern to any of you or are you still booking whenever regardless of hurricane season?

We live in Miami, so we're used to having to take hurricane season into account when we make plans. You really don't know what to expect weather-wise during that time of the year. Some years it's really calm and we have beautiful weather, other years, we don't. Since you're wedding is during the peak of hurricane season, have you considered going somewhere other than the Caribbean?

We are really set on the Caribbean because we want the all-inclusive resorts...do you have any other suggestions other than Caribbean that may be nice?

Since Hurricane season is so long, chances are you could still plan your Honeymoon in the Caribbean and still enjoy beautiful weather! I've planned several Honeymoon's for my Clients in the Caribbean and they have been very lucky.... No Hurricanes! If this is still a concern, though, I would recommend Hawaii! It's beautiful there in the fall. If you would like to discuss this further, you can contact me at ******@************************.***

Also, for all-inclusive, you may want to consider Cabo San Lucas.

    Hi Victoria,

We have an All Inclusive package that we provide in Costa Rica. It includes everything you can imagine. You might be interested as Costa Rica is completely out of the hurricane zone. It is a great way to enjoy the tropics without worry.

I would be glad to provide you with more information should you be interested. Please feel free to contact me at:

    Congratulations!

I've heard that in the Caribbean you are pretty safe from hurricane season if you stick to the ABC's. So in other words Aruba, Bahama, etc... They are supposed to be sheltered from the majority of the storms.

That's close, Delina, but not totally correct. The ABC islands, which are outside of the hurricane belt, are Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. The other island that historically tends not to be hit by hurricanes is Barbados.

That being said, LOTS and lots of people visit the Caribbean during hurricane season. Rates are lower, so you can get some better deals, and you just need to make sure you have travel insurance in the event that you're unlucky enough to have a storm impact your plans.

Ahh I have never thought about the hurricane season!! damn .... OK I guess I am not calling tonight the book Cayman Islands until I speak to DH in the morning... So maybe Hawaii it will be then... Too bad we had to cancel Fiji.. Why cant they just have a none stop flight to Fiji, why does it have to take 2+ days to get there??? :-( As you can tell I am very upset with canceling Fiji trip for 10 days :-(

We went on vacation to Cabo San Lucas and stayed at Westin Resort, loved every minute of it & will definitely go back there 1 day, just not for Honeymoon since we want to try something new out ... hmmm now where to go .. where to go for honeymoon, now you got me thinking AGAIN... & I thought we were set already where we going..

I was debating all night between Cayman Islands & St Marteen but now might not be neither

We were talking about going to Hawaii as well for our honeymoon, but it will take us too long to get there since we live on the east coast, and we can only go for 7 days since FH will be taking off work. Also, we want to go somewhere all-inclusive and there aren't any all-inclusive resorts in Hawaii. We are just going to go somewhere in the Caribbean and just get travel insurance in case there is a storm.

My FH and I were concerned about this but decided to bite the bullet. We booked at Tower Isle. If you are concerned you can always get traveler's insurance. We are keeping our fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly.

We are going to Jamaica in mid-September and just buying vacation insurance. We really wanted to go on our honeymoon right after the wedding, and after much MUCH discussion, we decided to just go for it and keep our fingers crossed! If a hurricane does hit, we will at least have the insurance to get our money back on the days we can't use.

We went to Breezes Runaway Bay in Jamaica in the last week of July and beginning of august. The rates were good and it only rained one day for 1/2 hour and the sun was back out and beautiful the rest of the time. They are all inclusive and it was great. We paid about $2400 with flight for a week.

Just buy Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance. I never book a summer trip without it. I would also book with a travel agent. Trust me, if hyou even sniff a hurricane coming, and you want to switch your destination for the same dates, getting through to an online website is next to impossible, even with insurance. However, a travel agent can have you switched to a different destination by the end of a phone call.

I would stay away from the lesser known all inclusive destinations like Costa Rica and Panama. Everyone I know who has gone there has brought home a parasite and spent their time on the potty. If you decide to go to either destination, bring Cipro and Immodium.

Mrs. Carole M - thank you so much for those tips! That's a great idea about booking with a travel agent and insurance - makes perfect sense! Also good to know about lesser known places, I wasn't sure about those either...I definitely don't want to worry about getting sick!

    Thank you very much!

I went to Bahamas during Hurricane season last year for a cruise with FH - Hurricane Irene did try to stop us because we were coming from Jersey but luckily we got the last flight out to Miami, FL and from there everything was good.....one of the islands did get hit during the hurricane but the captain just saved it for the last day of our trip when it was okay to go...me and FH are getting married in October and we are looking to go to the Caribbean for the all inclusive resorts too...I would stick to the ABC islands...we are going for Aruba hopefully it's really beautiful there and they have all inclusive resorts

    Good luck!!!

@Irchykk, if you have any questions about the Caymans I could answer them for you. My entire family is from there and still have family there. =)

A hurricane could be anywhere anytime.... so if i were you... just make sure you get good trip insurance for the hotel and the flight. My honeymoon will be in hurricane season too but right at the beginning so i'm hoping it won't hit but i'll pay for the insurance none the less. It doesn't effect where i'm going because theres no way to determine where a hurricane would be.
