Where can i find a low-key dress try on experience?

Sarah, on May 8, 2024 at 11:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

My wedding is 10+ months out and I am dreading the dress buying experience. I have big time anxiety and body image issues and that is compounded by the expense of this one outfit.. How do I find a boutique (warehouse? trunk sale?) where I can figure out my size and try things on without a crowd, without all the pomp and circumstance and without pressure to buy anything right away?

Maybe the industry has calmed down a bit since I've gone to Kleinfeld's for friends. But I cannot stomach the idea of trying things on in front of a crowd or having sales people fawn all over me.

How do I find a place that is low-key or low-pressure to go alone? Does that exist?

(If it helps, I'm on the east coast and willing to travel for the right place that won't stress me out!)

Have you checked out the try on at home program that Azazie and Cocomelody have? You can order a few styles to try on at home and mail back the ones that don’t work

I think Kleinfeld's is automatically going to be more over the top and anxiety driven because of the popularity and how well known it is. I would either like Michelle suggested look into some place like Azazie or Cocomelody or go to a smaller shop on like a weekday where there's not going to be as many people.

I think the idea of an outlet/overstock bridal store could work well. You could possibly poke your head in a few and get a sense how they run their stores. David's Bridal is still around but they recently were sold out of bankruptcy. They sell online too.

I found a local bridal shop where I had a room just for me and my guests. The saleslady wasn’t at all pushy or fawning, just asked what I liked or disliked about each dress so she could pick another choice. It was very low-key and not stressful. I’d check reviews of local places to find one that sounds right. Bring one or two trusted people with you instead of an entourage. I hope you have an amazing experience!

As a former bridal stylist, I highly recommend booking an appointment during a week day, like Monday-Wednesday, and earlier in the morning to avoid the crowds.

When booking your appointment you can say, or state something to the effect of, "I would love to have an appointment during a more quiet time of the day and week, and would like to avoid drawing too much attention to myself. " If you feel more confident, you can tell the receptionist or disclose in an email as to why.

Also state that your intention is NOT to purchase that day, as you would like to see what is out there first before booking a potential second appointment. This cues the stylist on how to spend their time with you, and to not be pushy.

    Some considerations:

-Do take pictures of you in dresses in both the indoor light and natural sunlight. Doing both is important so that you can get a feel for how you and the dress will look.

-Do not put on makeup or foundation other than a light lip gloss. As tempting as it could be to want to look your best, the dress samples will be stained with the makeup, making it a nightmare for stylists. Sometimes the stains are almost impossible to take out, so if you see a foundation stain on a sample, you know why.

-Consider having an artificial bouquet made of your choice of flowers (via Esty if you'd like). Seeing the "full picture" will become more clear, and maybe give you a bit of confidence.
