When Did You Book DJ?

Emilie R, on September 13, 2017 at 2:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

We're still 2 years from the wedding date, and I'm wondering if it is too soon to book a DJ? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I put my deposit on my DJ 12 months out and it enabled me to lock in 2016 prices. His prices have since increased so I am happy about it.

If you know for sure that it's the DJ you want to work with, why not? We booked our DJ early too but that's only because we had already heard him at a wedding and liked him then.

We booked about 4 months before the wedding.

If the person you want is already taking bookings that far out, though, there is nothing wrong with doing it now.

Wait...is he a professional DJ or a teacher? You should only hire actual professionals.

I think it depends. I would book your venue, and then whatever is most important to you after venue.

I would make a list of what's important and go in order. If photography is important do that next, then catering or DJ.

To me, the DJ wasn't that important. Yes they set the tone of the entire evening, but photos, food, open bar, were all more important to me than DJ. My venue came with a DJ though, so far he's great.

But if you really like this DJ the sooner the better. He might not book out 2 years in advance and you may change your mind a year down the road. But go with your gut! Maybe he can hold the date for you until you're a year out.

We booked a little under a year out. I feel like the earlier the better, so if you're sure about someone and they're willing to book you I would go for it. I think you have some time to shop around though, to make sure you're getting the best deal and you're getting exactly what you want.

Never too early! We planned for 7 months between engagement and wedding and almost couldn't get our DJ. A client of his canceled so we got lucky! He's already completely booking for 2018 and half of 2019.

ETA: client was a high school dance, I'm not celebrating a failed engagement or anything like that.

We booked ours 6 months out. Luckily we did not have to compete with all of the prom kids so he was open!

We booked ours immediately after booking the venue and securing the date. We wanted a particular one, and he's the best in town, so we booked early to make sure we got him.
