What's the meaning of keys?

Margaret, on April 13, 2016 at 4:52 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

I'm obviously oblivious to this one... what is with skeleton keys as escort cards/items? Just don't get the connection. I searched here, and other places, and no post (that I could find) discusses what the key signifies. Can anyone help with this one?

I think it's just because they are cool looking/pretty? I didn't think there was any symbolism, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think they mean anything, people just like them because they're antique and vintage, sometimes they are bottle openers too.

I did find this though: The key is the answer to the puzzle set by the maker of a lock. The key has even evolved into a powerful symbol representing the route as well as safekeeping of the things that are dearest to us.

Keys to love, keys to my heart, keys to life...the key that unlocks my heart

I don't think it's really much deeper than that.....

Thanks... @Celia... that was my first impression; I guess I was hoping for something more, I dunno...

I see them used to much for escort items; thought there must be some symbolism attached to sitting in a chair or something mysterious.

Celia pretty much nailed it lol, and those who said it's what's in right now. For me, I talked to FH about doing keys and he agreed because it has special symbolism for my Mom and I. When we first moved to FL from New Orleans, fleeing from Katrina, she gave me a key necklace she DIYed to remind me that in my new environment I always had the key to her heart. It's been a thing for us ever since, and it fits the theme of our wedding so I was thrilled when FH agreed to them as escort cards!

I collect them. I have some meaningful ones, (the key to my grandmas childhood home is my favorite one).

I think it's just a fad to go with the vintage trend.

Shows how out of touch I am, I didn't even know keys were a "thing"

    It's just theme related kitsch.

There are a couple of readings you can include in your ceremony that will tie in with the keys.

I think the popularity stems from the fact that vintage is so trendy now.

*However* I was thinking about using them and turning them into a key chain as wedding favors. Still haven't fully decided on that. But if we do, they tie into a lot of different things for my fiance and I:

    1. my nickname is kei (as in "key")

    2. I have a tiny skeleton key tattoo on my foot I got when I was 18 to represent wisdom (as in unlocking doors of knowledge, etc--also, as an aside, the Egyptian ankh represents wisdom as is the "key" to the afterlife (also have as a tattoo))

    3. we took inspiration from a castle/regal type theme for our wedding, so the key would be like giving everyone a "key to the castle." My fiance came up with that and thought he was pretty clever.

    4. "key to my heart" also applies I suppose. lol.

Keys symbolise love, life, strength and health in Italy. The key to a good marriage perhaps. You often find a set of four keys with a tag.

One key would symbolise love for a wedding or life for a 21st birthday or graduation. Keys are very popular favours in Italy.
