What things do you wish you'd done or did that you wish you hadn't?

Ellie, on May 6, 2024 at 7:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I'm 20 days away from my wedding and I'm trying to wrap up all the final details. I keep thinking of things that I could do - some still possible in the limited time left. Curious see if anyone has suggestions for things I probably haven't thought about that I might be able to do in the final 20 days.

The best thing to do is to relax. Are there some DIYs you can pull together? Sure. Probably. But honestly, I’d just spend this time finalizing whatever things you already have on your plate and enjoy the lead up to the wedding. Anything else will likely be an added stressor.

Do you have a wedding-day care and repair kit in case something goes wrong with your outfit -- sewing kit, stain remove, clothing tape, etc.? Maybe someone has a list of items handy with more details.

Make a few important lists of e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g you can think of:

    1) Who has sent you a gift, and their address. Try to send out at least two thank-yous a day following your honeymoon. The "polite" period to send a thank you is within three months of your wedding.

    2) What items you have for your wedding (dress, decor, cake cutting set, etc.) and it's location. Better yet, if items like linens and decor can be put in large storage tubs so that you know the location and can transport it easily, even better.

    3) If you have something that is fragile or breakable (like a picture frame) consider getting a few duplicates.

Get a massage or two if you can, especially closer to your wedding. Avoid having a facial too close to your wedding just in case if the products used make you break out.

Hydrogen peroxide can be added to your dress emergency kit if in case there is an inopportune stain that you need to get rid of.

If you have vows or a speech on a tablet or electronic device like a cell phone, make some printouts (yes, multiple). Sometimes devices won't work in the summer heat, and will shut down.

Always, ALWAYS opt for more bobby pins to hold your veil in place (if you have a veil). A gust of wind would have taken my veil mid ceremony had I not opted to have ten bobby pins to secure it.

I highly recommend having a designated datenight the week of wedding. Just focus the time on yourselves and not discuss anything wedding-related. My wedding was Saturday night, our datenight was a Wednesday before family started flying in.

I don't know what your food or catering situation is but most events have leftover food after. If you want to take some back to your hotel room or whatever for late-night snacks, have someone bring some Tupperware or to-go containers. My best friend did that for her wedding and we stayed up late and ate cake and french fries until 3 am and it was the best idea ever.

Double check that your caterer allows this as many do not due to food safety regulations enforced by the health department. They may box up a takeout meal for you and your partner only and dispose of the rest. If you are getting drop off catering from a favorite restaurant and not using a regular wedding caterer, you have more flexibility and can send leftovers home with loved ones or donate to nurses or security guards at a local homeless shelter or hospital.

Make a plan if you have not already to provide substantial food and beverages while you and your partner are getting ready, which includes breakfast and lunch at both locations. Whether that means a large DoorDash order or going to Costco beforehand. Be sure to count your vendors in that group (photographer, their assistant, hair/makeup team)

Have a kit together of things you may need for emergencies, at both locations. Have that on hand for guests as well. There are many emergency lists online specific to weddings because not everyone will have items in their purse or pocket.

Food, drinks, and emergency kits are covered! I'm clumsy so I knew those would be useful.
