What kind of Registry for the couple who’s already pretty established?

Kimberly, on June 22, 2019 at 10:04 PM Posted in Registry 0 34
My wedding is 10 months out and after readying a few discussions on the forum now wouldn’t be a bad time fo start my registry. My problem is my fiancé and I have been living together for about 3 years and our house is pretty much solid. Besides a honeymoon fund what other options have you all tried or seen other newlyweds opt for?

We've lived together for 5 years. We put some upgrades and replacements for worn out items on our registry. Honeyfunds and cash funds aren't really big in my social circle. I haven't seen anyone do one. Also, most people around here buy gifts for the shower and give a check for the wedding.

Thanks for the feedback Hannah! I never quite liked the idea of a honeymoons fund for us personally, but I know it’s great for other couples. I love your suggestion of putting upgrades or replacements for items you need! I can definitely think of a few things I would upgrade. I think also guests do prefer to do an actual gift instead of contributing towards a honeymoon but I’m not sure.

In lieu of a generally “honeymoon fund,” I had a friend who registered for experience gifts. I can’t remember what website she used- maybe someone knows but it’s been a few years. She registered for things like a train ride in the royal gorge railway and also things like an annual zoo membership and museum membership. One of the main criticisms I’ve seen if honeymoon funds is that people are contributing to ???, whereas in this case people know exactly what they are giving you even though it’s not a physical gift. I thought it was a cool idea.
We are also planning to register for upgrades and to replace things that are getting worn, like a new vacuum, towels, and sheets.

My fiance and I live together as well. We walked around the house checking out the kitchen etc to see if we needed upgrades or replacements. For example, we already have dishes but I could use a few extra place settings so we added those. Luckily our pattern was still available.

I've lived with my FH for over 3 years now. I went through each room in my house to see what we might need and what we could upgrade. I honestly had an incredibly difficult time. Good luck!

Thanks Trista. I’m sure I can scrounge up a few things if I take my time and look at every room in the house. Would it be strange to include in our registry something for our pets? I have a cat and dogs. For example a cat condo? Or should we stick strictly for things for us and the house?

I think honeyfunds/cash registries are a know your crowd kind of thing. But yeah, we registered for things like glass storage containers to replace our old plastic ones, some new knives, new cooking utensils (spatulas, ladles, etc.), new towels, drinking glasses (to replace all the ones that have been broken over the years). We also registered for some fun gadgets like a bar cart (1st thing purchased) and an instant pot. I ended up with a large enough list I think with just replacements.

That's a good question. I personally dont see anything wrong with putting pet accessories on there as long as it's things like bowls, cat trees, etc. As long as they aren't disposable.

Hubby and I have lived together for a while so we registered for upgrades and "nice to haves."
Gift cards could always be an option. If you own a home and have repairs you need to do you could register for home depot/Lowe's gift cards.

Same here! A lot of our registry is upgraded/new kitchen stuff, bathroom and living room decor, etc. You can always sell or donate older things to replace them. We also added fun stuff in our registry like games for indoor and outdoor game nights.

You could always just register for new versions of what you have or think you need replacing. Or some people opt to ask people to donate to a charity dear to them

We put upgrades as well. Some people say if you don’t put anything you will get money. I think it is a know your crowd deal. If we did not put anything we would get stuff we don’t need. We have lived togather 2 years he lived on his own 10. Someone asked is if we need silver wear. When we said not the seemed like they were hinting they got us something special so I said well you can always use more silver wear.
AnywY we are asking for new sheets a organizer for a new crock pot. New shower curtain new bath mAts door mats. Just things your upgrade or change.

This is exactly what FH and I discussed and plan to do. We’re don’t need “things” and honestly value our experiences together more than “stuff” and household items (which we already have).

When we went to bed bath and beyond the consultant was like "how old is your toaster?" Umm 19 years old. Some of that stuff you never think about. Our dishes were about that old too

I know right!! My 20 year old stuff still works. We’re not going to get rid of the stuff we’re actually going to use it in our camper.

It’s a good idea to temper not everyone has money to give up expensive things. Sorry I do not mean to tell you what to do just throwing a thought out there.
