What do you & your spouse usually give as a wedding gift?

Yasmine, on July 12, 2021 at 1:19 PM Posted in Registry 0 41

Just curious, what do you & your spouse usually give as a wedding gift? Do you have any "go-to" gifts? Or does it matter on who is getting married?

For my husband and I, we usually just give cash. I'm not a huge fan of registries lol usually only for baby showers will I shop from a registry.

What about everyone else?

If there's a shower then I'll end up taking a gift to the shower and we will always take a card with cash to the event itself. I have no clue what's normal or considered proper etiquette, that's just what we've decided works best for us.

Where I live the only acceptable gift to an actual wedding is cash. Rule of thumb is to give enough to cover the cost of having you there ($150-200 per guest). So we usually give $300-400 depending on how close we are to the couple. More for best friends or family.

We only do a registry for the bridal shower. However it is also typical to contribute to a honeymoon fund or something.
This is in Long Island, NY for reference.

I usually bring a gift from the registry to the shower, and I typically give a card with cash in it at the wedding!

We always give cash! I love looking at registries for fun, but being in our 30s I know that most friends don’t need the gifts and would prefer cash, plus it’s easier for us. We usually give $200+ but there was a time when I went back to school and money was tight that we spent less- I’ve been trying to make up for it with spending over the top on their baby shower gifts!

We'll check the registry and ask if there's something specific they really wanted off of it and go with that. Smiley smile

In our families and social circles, cash (in any form including gift cards) is never given for any occasion, not even kids’ birthdays. You always bring a physical gift and you always ask the parents or the wedding party where the couple is registered. Not everyone is invited to the shower which is ok but every wedding we have attended, there are practically zero loose cards and the gift table is overflowing.

As for the price tag, it depends on what we can comfortably afford.

Same for me. I’ve never seen actual gifts at a wedding. Always a card box.

I love giving gifts and shopping in general so I have usually gotten a gift off the registry. After being on this forum a bit, I understand people would prefer cash so that’s what I’ll do moving forward.

My dad gives every couple who’s wedding he attends a toolbox and cookbook 😂 it’s definitely not on people’s registries but it actually is a pretty great gift. People always love it. But he’s that kind of person.

I were actually curious about that... I mean: what was the amount that you give in the US normally. In France it's around 30-120$ par person. In Poland we give not less than 130$.

We either give something from the registry or cash. When giving something from the registry, we always have the gift shipped directly to the bride and groom instead of bringing it to the wedding itself.

Yes I agree with the gift for the shower (if there is one) but cash is definitely the way to go. It's what my husband and I preferred too!

It depends, I'm in the US and my mom always told me give what you can afford. I usually give $100 per person. Most people will say give enough to cover what you think the cost of the per person rate for food/drink.
