What age do toddlers get their own seats?

Dani, on February 8, 2024 at 4:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

At what age would you say that toddlers at a wedding should be given their own seat? If it helps, I'm talking about the reception specifically, which will be dining chairs at round tables (the ceremony doesn't matter as much because it's all church pews with plenty of room for everyone).

We are paying to rent each chair, and also we are close to hitting the venue's maximum capacity so the amount of actual chairs vs. babies/toddlers in laps is a number we'll need to know.

Would you say 20 months? 24 months? If a child is right on the line, we'll probably just reach out to the guests directly and ask if they'd like a chair for their child or if they plan to have the child in their laps (in my family all the babies get passed around the grandparents, and want to toddle around so they don't really stay in chairs anyway).

What's the etiquette on providing chairs and asking if someone needs a chair for a toddler?

Can you rent highchairs? Honestly my kids started sitting in their own chairs at events at just over a year old, especially to eat. I'd be pretty annoyed to have to combat my two year old in my lap while trying to eat at a wedding.

Also keep in mind that the venue max is usually due to fire codes and lap children will still count toward that.

I would designate a seat for everyone aged 1 year and up. My kid was a little older when she started sitting in her own seat, but I know plenty who have started at age 1. Parents often don't want to hold their children in their laps while they eat. I would probably reach out to the families in question and see what they prefer. If you're not able to provide high chairs, let them know. We have a travel booster seat we use for events where we know high chairs won't be available

Yep I would contact the people with kids that age and ask for a preference. If your venue doesn't have high chairs, most parents have a portable booster seat for eating at tables. Yes, the babies and kids still count toward the room capacity.

I would have a place and a highchair for all babies and toddlers who can sit up It’s not appropriate to expect parents to hold their child on their lap for four or five hours, no matter how many people occasionally want to take them. If the place doesn’t have enough high chairs or boosters they can be rented.

Generally, toddlers around 2 years old and older would benefit from having their own seat at a reception. However, family dynamics and preferences vary. Reach out directly to guests with toddlers, around the 20-24 month mark, asking if they'd prefer a chair for their child or plan to have them on their laps. This ensures you cater to individual needs while managing seating logistics and costs effectively.
