Wedding rings and overseas honeymoon---to take or leave

Labake , on April 11, 2012 at 8:08 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

Is there anyone else thinking about leaving their rings at home? Even if you don't have an expensive ring, there is sentimental value that cannot be replaced.

My ring is insured but ideally, you don't want to have to make that claim.

I told FH I was considering leaving the diamonds at home and wearing a plain $25 band in Belize.

Am I being paranoid? Thoughts and opinions please.

Your ring can get lost just as easily at home as it can somewhere else. FH and I are going on a cruise and we're taking ours.

My friend bought a really pretty knockoff of her ring and left her real one at home. I'm not sure what I will do.

Where are you staying in Belize? I think it depends on where you're going and what you're doing. And how big those rocks are. Smiley smile I would probably not wear diamonds or anything else attention-getting in certain parts of the world or certain areas of town but on an AI resort or cruise ship? I say bling it up, lady. Smiley smile You will not be the only one.

And also - what are your habits when it comes to wearing the ring? Are you going to take it off all day and leave it in the room safe when you're down by the pool or the beach? I wear mine 24/7 pretty much no matter what I'm doing, so I'm not going to accidentally leave it on the counter to tempt the housekeeping staff.

@ Hannah you are right, you can lose it anywhere. I am talking about getting robbed. Maybe I've lived in one too many bad neighborhoods. I have been robbed once, attempted robberies- 3 times.

@ Erin B- I don't know either. Plus we are getting married away from home and there are logistics to worry about.(Whowill have the rings to transport home). We are staying on a private island in Belize but still we will b going to many tourist traps.

Labake, you can get robbed at home also, fire, anything can happen ...

I would feel safer if I took it with me... They have the safes at the hotels that are pretty safe, I always use it for my wallet/passport & jewelry ... So if you going to the beach for the day, I would definitely leave it in the safe ... If you going to dinner, then I would wear it ... thats just me ...

We have the same issue about where we would leave the bling. Our wedding is OOT for us. Would we just ask the FILs to keep them in a safe place for 3 weeks? No trust issues obviously, but I think I would worry less about them getting misplaced/whatever if they were physically on my body the whole time.

@ Kris We are staying in Dangriga on a small island. I wear my ring all the time except for making meatloaf, painting etc. I guess I'm worried about when we go into town and to the Mayan ruins.

I think I'm leaning towards taking it and just being prudent. If I get robbed, I'll just give them up of course. I don't think I wantto tell my mom or his mom to watch the rings. Too much responsiblity.

I've just been robbed several times so I'm always aware of it. I'm hypersensitive. It doesn't help that FH used to do some secret service type work and he is paranoid as well.

I totally get your point and don't think you are being hypersensitive, Labake. Especially after your personal experiences!

I'm sorry you've been robbed, that's so awful! You mean on the street? I can definitely see feeling hypersensitive.

And your FH used to do secret service work? Ooooh! I bet he has some good stories. Smiley smile

@Labake O. - given your past experiences I can see why you are concerned. For certain countries travel tips do suggest not wearing jewelry so it's a legitimate concern. You just have to do what you feel comfortable doing.

This UK gov site suggests not wearing jewelry.

    Oh yeah on the street

1st time- Tickets got stolen. Don't wear a lanyard around your neck

2nd time- In Nigeria, I was born there so I thought I could go back and mix witht he locals. No, I couldn't. My purse almost got cut from the straps while waiting to cross the street.

3rd time- In DC. Leaving a party and walking to the metro. The guy asked for me and my friend's purse and when he realized there was no money in it, he gave it back.

@ Kris FH used to do personal protection and work with secret . He planned routes and used to have to plan safe houses, etc. He loved it. Now he has a nice sit down job with the department of defense. He was complaining about a PM the other day and I thought of you and your FH.

My friend's husband lost his ring in the sand in Jamaica, so they bought a new one while they were there- and he was allergic to it!

Talk about a string of bad luck...as far as things getting stolen I have no clue- but definitely make sure they're fitted properly!

OMG, FH has two PMs now b/c his client has him working on two projects. And he has a boss in CO. Now he has a temporary consultant who he's training to take over his project while we're gone on HM. And then he has me, who is his PM for all things wedding-related. We share several google docs. Smiley smile Poor guy needs a vacation like I cannot even tell you.

I can't believe that happened to you three times, and I can't believe the guy in DC actually gave it back. And I'm so glad you weren't hurt. I feel like most of those guys really don't want serious trouble, they just want quick cash, but you never know when somebody is unstable or just doesn't give a shxt. That's the scary part to me.

So what kind of handbag do you carry when you travel? I was thinking I would carry a small crossbody bag or wristlet that I could keep my palm on. I've worn those undershirt things before and they just get so hot and sticky. Ugh.

My center stone is my grandmothers so I never plan to bring it to a beach or anything like that. I have a very nice fake set.

I mentioned to FH that I thought about getting a $20 fake wedding set to take on the HM. He told me I was nuts. He had never heard of such a thing.

I didn't bring it when we went to Aruba, however we will be getting married in TX, and then going straight to Panama, and I don't want to ask someone to be responsible for bringing it back to MA (where we live)... so we will bring it to Panama...

However Panama is extremely safe, and half the time we will be at a house we own, and the other half at a resort where we will get a safe Smiley smile... so, I guess my advice is leave it if you have someone responsible to watch it/somewhere to put it, otherwise bring it.

Oh yeah, I can laugh about it now but I"ve learned there is no such thing as a good neighborhood.

No undershirt thing for me. Yuck.

I never thought of this. I guess something like the sling.

I hadn't thought about this, but I will probably get a nice fake set for travel.

When we vacationed in Aruba, we locked my engagement ring in the safe. I've read that wearing the ring in the pool wasn't great for it and I didn't want to risk losing it (it's insured). For our honeymoon (Antigua), I'll probably just wear my band. It'll be locked up for swimming.
