My wedding isn’t until September 2022, but when is the best time or month to buy the wedding dress. I need to lose about 30 pounds before I buy my dress

Most places suggest you purchase your dress 9-12 months before your wedding. So right now is a perfect time for you to start looking! Smiley smile

My wedding is also September 2022 and I bought my dress this past August. The shops I went to say the latest to buy something would be this November. Everything is taking much longer now, but wedding dresses in general usually take a while. Mine is suppose to take 6 months to come in and then I'll need alterations.

I am also in the same boat and trying to lose 25 lbs before the wedding, however I went dress shopping and the place I like has off the rack dresses and I wasn't really attached to any there so I'm going to wait until April to buy off the rack so I can be as close to my goal weight as possible and get a dress that won't need a ton of alterations.

Bridal boutiques recommend having your dress ordered no less than 10 months before your wedding date. This allows time for the dress to be ordered and arrive and for you to get alterations done. That being said, I would start dress shopping now!

It took 6 months for my dress to come in and I am getting married in April 2022 so there is enough time for alternations, I would suggest start looking now and order a size smaller if you are planning on loosing weight

I am scared that I might gain weight or lose too much weight. And the money I spend will go to waste

The bridal salon I got my dress from told me this because I was worried about the same thing as you! "So with bridal, just know, you can absolutely take in any gown at least two sizes from the original, that can be anywhere from around 3-4 inches all the way around, if not more! I personally had a bride who bought a gown that had been discontinued, and she just fell completely in love, but it was quite a bit big on her. So even with it being fully beaded all the way around, seamstress was able to take her down about three dress sizes, if not more, and she just looked incredible!!!"

9 months out is the latest to buy your wedding dress. Due to covid the day I went to browse dresses was also the day I made my purchase since everything was closed before that. If you want to start with just browsing you can start now and make your final purchase 9 months out. I was also on a weight loss journey prior to my dress shopping I wanted to lose 20 pounds before looking but instead lost 15 in 8 weeks and the last 5 once my dress came in 3 months later. (Be prepared for plateaus) Try to lose what you can now and just maintain because my alterations cost more than my dress in the end from how much they had to take in. Also a corset back is best and easily adjustable if you do continue to lose weight unlike a zipper.

Unless advised by your doctor, you don’t *need* to lose any weight! If you lose weight quickly, it’s easier to gain back quickly or have fluctuate. I’d focus on eating healthy, Whole Foods and exercising rather than rapid weight loss. I’m sure you look great!!!

They cost more than your dress! Oh my goodness, now I'm worried. How much were your alterations? I heard $800 was average? Not sure if that's correct or not.

My dress was 735 a Mori lee 5108 and my alterations were 850. After reading the many post on this site I found that 800 is actually very pricey and many brides have been getting theirs for half the cost. My dress had to be taken in everywhere by the time I was 8 weeks out when the dress once fit perfectly and didn’t need more than a hem and bustle. It could have also been the fact that I got alterations done at the bridal store I purchased the dress from. I hear bridal boutiques tend to be more expensive.

Be careful listening to bridal consultants! Make sure you hear from a seamstress’s mouth that a specific alteration can be done. I say this because I was told by a bridal consultant that “wedding dresses can be let out 1 size and taken in up to 3 sizes”. Thank goodness I consulted with a seamstress first, because my dress could only be taken in one size MAX, and cannot be let out at all! Whether a dress can be altered up or down depends 100% on the design, structure and material of the dress, and bridal consultants are usually not trained/skilled in this area.
