Wedding Dress: What did you do with it?

Kiri, on November 9, 2015 at 2:03 PM Posted in Married Life 0 26

As of now, my dress is still hanging in our room in the garment bag. And I am still holding onto the preservation kit. I'm pretty sure I'll get it cleaned and preserved. But not sure what comes afterwards... keep? sell? donate?

I have looked up previous discussions but still can't make up my mind, so... married ladies, what did you do with your wedding dress after the big day? What is the biggest factor that convinced you to do it? Thanks Smiley smile !

Following! I dropped mine off at the dry cleaners last weekend but I don't know what to do with it once I get it back Smiley atonished

One of my girlfriends and I talked about having a party where we could all re-wear our wedding dresses. I think it would be kinda hilarious. But even if we did do it (unlikely it will actually happen), still no idea what to do with it after said party..

Cleaned it and left it in a box and told DH, "If I still fit in it on our 25th anniversary, you owe me a big party!" Now I wish I'd sold it or donated it, but I'm only 8 years out and I'd love to wear it again (and yes, it would still fit).

@MrsPej, that is the exact dilemma I have!

While wearing it on my wedding anniversary sounds romantic, I don't think I'll end up doing that. And keeping it for my future daughter is just too far away for me to think about at this point Smiley tongue.

So I guess logically, I lean towards the sell / donate options. It's really the emotional attachment to the dress that's getting to me...

Date twin, mine is still in the bag, hanging on a bedroom door. I need to get it to the cleaners, but I'm being cheap and haven't done any research on who to take it to. There's no way I can part with it. My grandparents bought it for me and my grandfather passed away before the wedding. So, it will just collect dust somewhere lol.

There's a place here that makes gowns for babies that have gone too soon. I love love love my dress, but I also love the idea of wedding dresses being made into gowns for the precious angel babies. I'm not sure what I will do as of yet.

I listed mine. We are not having children and I see no use in keeping it.

We are in the same boat! My dress is currently hanging in our guest room... not even in a bag. Its been there since July lol. I have had the preservation kit for a month but haven't been ready to send it away yet. I'm also going to be preserving my veil, which we are going to use for a mini-shoot for wedding details that we missed on the big day, so I'm waiting til we do that. We plan to have children, but I have no illusions of my future daughters or daughter-in-laws wearing it -- styles change, they will want their own. However, there's no way I would sell it - it was altered to fit me, and I'm very petite so very few people would be able to buy it, plus used dresses always sell for such a small price, I wouldn't want to let it go for that! Who knows, maybe my future kids will want to use a piece of it like have it sewn into a hem or wrapped around a bouquet, or wear my veil. But no matter what, I'm keeping it just to keep it!

Mine is still hanging in the garment bag. I've been to cheap and lazy to take it to the cleaners - boy does it need it though. I plan on keeping mine. Putting in on for anniversaries, or a random night when we need a reminder of the love we shared that day seems like a great idea in theory, not sure in practice (though my dress isn't big and heavy). Its not something I could ever give away.

I sent mine for preservation soon after wedding. Other than that i have no idea what to do with it. I don't think i can sell it either, i bought the smallest size and the dress was altered even smaller to fit me. Im wondering if my cousins would be able to fit in it. I think it would be nice if the dress was worn again, even if it's by my cousins.

I love my dress, and i don't think i want it to get cut up to make other things. Not yet at least. I miss wearing it the day after my wedding.

I don't know if i can wear it for anniversary, cuz i would need someone to tie the corset on the back for me...and the dress is big and heavy. Not something i can wear by myself... sigh

FH and I just had this discussion yesterday. We don't have children, our nieces would probably be wearing their mothers (maybe)... so what should we do with it? Sell it or donate it? There is a group called Sweet Send Aways and they make outfits for stillborn children to be buried in. These are made out of donated wedding dresses. They even post pictures of the outfits so you can see what was made from your dress. I am really considering this.

A year and a half later, it's still draped over the same chair I put it when I got home. Not kidding.

I have already listed mine for sale online. I don't have any attachment to it at all, and since I know I'll have a bazillion photos of me in it I'd prefer it finds a new forever home.

I wanted to sell it. Although we have daughters, I'm sure they'd much rather buy their own! Plus, it will be dated by the time they marry and I don't want them to wear it! I'm selfish. But only because I loved shopping for mine and would like my babies to have their own 'hunt' for their dresses. Dh though insists I do not sell it. He says he loves it and doesn't want to part with it. So, it's in the basement closet in the garment bag. Yeah, my dh is a suck lol

Mine is a mermaid dress, so I'm going to have the bottom chopped off, maybe have it dyed emerald green (my fav) and wear it as a cocktail dress for all those fancy parties we don't go to, but one day will.

We sold mine. I wish we'd been able to sell NotFroofy's. Unfortunately, the combination of it having been hemmed for someone 5'1" and our not knowing the style number has been a fatal combination in that regard.

Thanks for sharing! Glad to hear I'm not the only one that hasn't done anything about it lol.

@Elyse Hi Date Twin! So sorry for your loss. It's definitely the right decision to keep it for you!

@Rosie9615 That's such an awesome display! But I'll need to get a place with a closet that size first Smiley tongue .

For the ladies that listed / sold the dress, how much cost (percentage is fine) were you able to recover from what you originally spent? I used the calculator tool on PreOwnedWeddingDresses, and the suggested listing price is 1/3 of what I spent on dress alterations overall (From around 1k to $332).

It's not bad, but I'm also weighing the option of donating it for a good cause... I'll look up the groups / organizations that were mentioned in this post. Thanks again everyone Smiley smile !
