Wedding day NOT the “best day of your life”??

Cece, on October 25, 2022 at 8:22 AM Posted in Community Conversations 1 16
OK, I know this is probably going to be controversial, but bear with me…
Does anyone else NOT expect their wedding day to be “the best day of their life”? Don’t get me wrong, I think (hope!) it is going to be a fun, fantastic day! But do I hope it is going to be the best day of my life?..NO. I feel like social media and just society as a whole has really hyped up wedding days for brides to be the end all be all experience of their entire lives (which probably explains why there are so many bridezillas and so many brides who absolutely lose it and cannot move past their wedding day when things don’t go perfectly). When I think about it, it feels just sad and wrong to be taught that entering into a legally binding contract is going to be the best day of your life. I hope to have a great time at my wedding, but I hope to have many many more days in the years to come that are just as good, and hopefully even better! Anyone else feel like this thought process is just creating unneeded stress and unrealistic expectations of weddings? Anyone else hope their wedding day WON’T be “the best day of their life”??

I always thought people said it was the best day because they get to marry the love of their life not the actual wedding itself 🤦‍♀️

But I agree, I don't think my wedding will be amazing. I just want everyone to eat, drink, dance and have a good time. But I'm sure at least 1 thing will go wrong.

I totally agree that it creates unnecessary pressure, which then amplifies minor things that went "wrong" (DJ played a song from the "Do Not Play" list, makeup artist ran late, etc) and makes them seem like massive issues. I did not approach my wedding with the mentality of it having to be a perfect day or the best day - we instead looked forward to it as a weekend that we would be spending with so many of our favorite people, without the pressure of it needing to be the best day ever. I hope that way later on in my life, I can look back on my life and not be able to choose just one day as my "best day ever" - but rather a lifetime of memorable days and events that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Ha, it definitely wasn't the best day of my life. But, it was a good party after 5 months of indescribable anxiety. I'm on WW more after to understand it all. I am fortunate to have a lot of special days in my life though. But, perhaps a bit different for my partner as he was a groom-zilla.

I do think the industry does make money on wedding expectations. Like why would we buy new shoes, new jewelry, rent a Rolls Royce, etc.? Are we supposed to feel the most special and most beautiful in our lives on this day? Are we queens deserving of ladies in waiting? Chile, I was bloated, sleepless, and my husband popped a new pimple on my chest right before our pictures. Ah well, to the rest of our lives.

Yeah, not at all. I expect that it will be fun and a good party, but getting engaged was by far the best day of my life this far. I don't think anything will top that until I have kids.

The day we actually got married was very mundane. Signing a paper isnt all that exciting lol. I think the wedding will be a fun party though.

I certainly didn't. I expected to have fun, eat good food, celebrate with friends and family, and (most importantly) get married. All of those expectations were met and we had a beautiful, wonderful, day. Since then, we've had many wonderful days/events/occurrences that have brought us joy and make us smile to look back at. To my mind, it's about a lifetime of memories rather than one "best" day.

Lol I’m getting married at an outdoor venue in Florida in September so the middle of hurricane season. If anything, I’m expecting something to go horribly wrong.

Nope. Honestly I just really hope that it all starts to feel real and not like I'm making this up in some kind of delusional dream. That, and that my anxiety doesnt get the better of me on the day. I just want to relax, have fun, and marry my person.

I feel the same way! I mean, it'll be my wedding day and I'm super excited but at the same time, it's just another Saturday. There's just a fun party attached!

Everyone pushes the "it's your day" stuff and I can how it breeds perfection. I'm trying to make a mantra of "perspective" every time I get a vendor quote or look at Etsy and Pinterest because at the end of the day, it's literally one day. Things will go wrong, people will show up or not show up, I'll forget something, the weather will be crazy and on and on. The end result is the best part... being married to a cool guy that I can't wait to continuing living life with!

I could not agree more. In reality, you're holding a huge event with the responsibility of hosting guests well. Simultaneously, you're supposed to look better than you've ever looked before and to stay the way all day. The amount of pressure on one day is insane. Social media influences have driven this industry to extreme lengths, and I think some couples get detached from what's realistic.

I'm much more excited about life with my partner afterwards than the wedding itself c:

I felt the same! I think that's why I was so laid back. There were no major set backs and I got to marry the love of my life after 8 years together and have fun. That's what I expected the day to be so there wasn't anything to be disappointed by! I never expected anything more. I was told I should cry when I decided on my wedding dress...I did not lol

I agree with this. The Wedding Industry has led couples to believe that anything even a smidge non traditional will cause your marriage to be null and void, and friends and family will be embarrassed for you as a result. That is why so many venues and vendors are unwilling to stray from specific visions.

Something else that has become super popular as of late that never used to be a thing was multiple parties/receptions to the point where couples are led to believe that they will never again host a party for their loved ones. So they feel they have to prolong the wedding day with ceremony and reception held on different days, multiple ceremonies over many days, multiple receptions for various groups instead of one for everyone they want in attendance. They are not cost savers, even though the wedding industry markets them as such.

I agree! I think a lot of people feel if one or two things go wrong their wedding was ‘ruined’ which takes away from everything that went right. I know we had a couple hiccups, but I definitely had an amazing time and we didn’t let the small things stop us from enjoying our wedding.

My friend quite literally walked down the isle in her nightgown due to an unforeseen disaster. She still says it was the best day of her life!

Take the party away, and getting married to this person makes it the best day (so far). The party should have nothing to do with making it "the best day." Go in with that attitude and there will be many other days to top the wedding day.
As far as the wedding, not everything will go as planned, there will be mistakes, there will be things you wished you did differently. It will still be the best Day so far, if it's the person, not the event that makes it great.

Sure. The couple really need to have that attitude going into the wedding ceremony. But we so often try to make this the best party too. Remember though that people that are upset how their wedding went are not likely to be happy when people around them are saying to rejoice that they got married and now are a couple. There also are the situations where people really have a disaster -- such as a sudden or recent death of a loved one. Short of such terrible happenings, try to remember the best things about being married.
