Wedding Cake: yay or nay

Briana, on April 17, 2020 at 12:59 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 46

Not sure if this is the right Forum for this. But my fiance and I are getting married in September. We are doing cookies for dessert and originally thought of just having a cutting cake for photo purposes. However, no one will be eating the cake since we aren't serving it for dessert and recently we've been thinking of just not doing a cake at all. Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with no cake at all? Do people really care since the dessert is something different? Thanks in advance!

I would nix it if it’s not that important to you. I’ve been to weddings were the couple cut into a cake, but didn’t actually serve cake to guests... and it confused a lot of the guests because they thought they would get cake too.

I think that's fine to nix it too. you can still do something with the cookies aha like take photos feeding each other a cookie

I agree with Karla. I went to a wedding where the bride and groom did a cake cutting but no cake was served (they had a dessert buffet table with other treats) and a bunch of guests were confused about when we would get to eat the cake, which we never did because it wasn't served

I didn't even think about the confusion factor, that makes sense! Thanks

We just did various desserts. We had no wedding cake and didn’t even cut a cake for picture purposes. I didn’t hear anyone complain!

I would just skip it then. I am having a small cutting cake and a dessert bar that will have cupcakes to satisfy the cake people.

If you're not serving cake guests, then skip it entirely, even for the photo ops. Guests will enjoy any dessert but there needs to be some fairness. Don't have something just for you that guests can't partake in.

We are not doing cake at all. Just a special dessert from the restaurant. Figured by the time appetizers, main entree, and dessert, everyone would be full. Plus we are not big dessert people.

I was originally thinking of doing a small cake for photo purposes and a dessert bar, but based on what I’ve read not only on this post but others’ it seems guests could feel offended or confused. Thinking instead of maybe a pie! We were going to do one or two pies for guests anyways as part of the dessert table. Or maybe one big cupcake? Sort of something that might already be a part of the dessert table.

We are having cupcakes (4 flavors) but we will also have a small cake for us to cut. We are doing a cupcake tower with the small cake sitting on top. We aren't doing a lot of decorations so the cupcake tower will be a nice display.

I would skip the cake all together so there is no confusion. I know my guest are crazy about wedding cake so it’s just for me! I love your cookie idea. I hope whatever you choose your day turns out to be exactly what you want💜

We’re doing cake for the wedding party and cupcakes for everyone else.
It gave us what we wanted as well as providing flavor options for the guests.

We aren't big on cake either but I wanted a small one for cutting and pictures! We were also thinking a dessert table, and doing cupcakes as part of it.

This is pretty much spot on to what we are doing for our wedding. We are having one small cake for us to cut then having cookies & duck donuts.

100% do not cut a cake if you aren't serving it!

Yes! I went to a wedding where they cut a cake and it took all of us as guests so long to realize cake wasn't being served and we were suppose to go serve ourselves at the dessert bar.

If it is the memory you want you can do a couple things here. If you are having two separate locations, you can take pics before your guest arrive.

Or during the cocktail hour you can go do your cake cutting while guests are mingling. Just don't let them see, which can be hard if you are sharing a space. If you are sharing a space with a room flip, while they are flipping the room you can take pictures then.

But I agree with a few others, if you are not going to serve cake, then I personally wouldn't tease the guests with a cake cutting presentation and then go "sike, you guys don't get any but there's a dessert table." But ultimately it is your decision.
