Wearing engagement ring on vacation?

Shauncey, on April 18, 2018 at 8:33 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 37

Hi everyone! FH and I are going on vacation to the Bahamas next week and are worried about me wearing my engagement ring. We will be in the ocean, probably going snorkeling and in the pool... I worry about it falling off when in the ocean (it's never fallen off but still...) I hate the idea of not wearing it but looking for some advice. Do you ladies leave your rings at home on vacations or do you wear them?

I went to Mexico this past December and wore my ering while there. I swam in the pool with it on, but took it off and left it with family members while I was swimming in the ocean.

I bought a set of silicon rings from walmart (golds gym brand) and am wearing one of them for my work. I work with horses and so I don't want my ering getting caught on something or damaged. I would recommend getting silicon rings to use as a replacement. You can still bring the ring and wear it at times, but wear the silicon one as needed. I couldn't stand not wearing a ring once I got my ering, so the silicon one is great. And the walmart ones have 3 rings in one set for about $5 as compared to others which are $25 for one ring.

I lock my engagement ring up or, if the hotel doesn't have a safe I dismantle a clean (obvi) tampon put it in the plastic applicator, re-wrap it like it's never used, put it back in the ziploc with my other stuff, and bury it in my luggage. If someone wants to rob our luggage they aren't digging through feminine hygiene they are looking at end tables and dressers.

As for on my body i use silicone rings when I'm active. They are fun and comfortable and if I lose or destroy them they're so cheap I don't feel bad.

You lock them in the hotel safe when you’re at the pool, the beach, the gym...

I took my ring off and left it locked in our hotel safe when we went to the beach. I suppose if there had been no safe, I would’ve left it locked in my suitcase.

    Ok, that is actually genius.

H and I wear silicone rings when we're swimming.

After we got engaged, we went on a cruise and I had my ring on. It didn't even cross my mind to leave it behind because I love wearing my e-ring. Smiley smile I did not have any issues. It didn't fall and it didn't get lost. We were also in the ocean doing water activities. I also had my e-ring and wedding ring during honeymoon where we were also in the ocean and stuff.

I just went on a cruise and never wore my engagement ring off the boat. I put it in the safe in the room and wore a silicone ring as a replacement. Also did the same while on the boat but out at the pool, etc.
I think I would be more nervous leaving if home for so long without me being able to check on it.

I would be very leery of wearing a ring in the water. If the water is colder than your body temperature, your fingers get smaller. This highly increases the risk of it falling off. I have several friends that scuba dive in Lake Tahoe and have found it to be a very profitable hobby Unfortunately. Just a word to the wise.
I don’t hesitate taking mine on vacation but it stays in the room safe and I wear a silicone ring when doing anything active. Also I have heard that chlorine can discolor metals and many stones. Also sunscreen will make your ring look dingy very fast.

I have heard of many people wearing fake ones or the silicone bands on vacation! BUT I went on a two week vacation last year and I wore mine. I honestly never even thought about it after the first day.

Thanks everyone this helps! My FH is uncomfortable with me even bringing my ring on vacation (makes me so sad, I hate not wearing it!) But I actually have a silicone one I bought for when I go to the gym, so I think I'll just wear that Smiley smile I appreciate everyone's input - especially for when we go on our honey moon in November! (I'll be so sad to not wear my rings then!!!)

A friend and I each lost a ring in the ocean on a trip to Mexico a few years ago. Neither ring was worth much but we both felt supid. Because of that I won't wear a ring swimming anymore.

I got engaged while I was on a cruise to the Bahamas. I left my ring on (in the water and all) simply because i felt it was secure enough. I did constantly check my hand to make sure it was there. Maybe get a cheap ring, that if it fell off you wouldn’t be devastated, to wear while in the water just in case? Of course not replacing it but allowing you to feel a little more secure just in case. Congratulations and enjoy your vacation!

I left mine at home when we traveled to Punta Cana in Nov. I was worried about losing it. It felt odd at first not to wear it, but I was glad to not have to worry about it.

I got engaged on a cruise, and I was super nervous to wear my ring but my FH told me it was fine🤷🏻‍♀️ It ended up being fine, but I plan on getting a silicone one for future active occasions!

My friend who has been married a few years gave me this advice for the honeymoon: leave the engagement ring at home and just bring your wedding band as those tend to be less expensive. Either way, make sure your rings are insured!!

I personally probably wouldn't bring mine, but just locking it up could work too. If I was traveling I'd probably just wear a silicone one, or after the wedding, just wear the band.

I’ll probably leave my rings in the safe at home for the honeymoon. I don’t usually take it off EVER but for the activities you described I would probably take it off and leave it in our room safe. It makes me much more nervous continually taking it off and on that I will lose it.

I think I’m planning on leaving mine at home (sadly). My FH really doesn’t want me to take my rings and potentially lose them or get them stolen which I totally get because my rings were not cheap. I’ll be sad not to take them but he definitely has a point and I don’t want to be constantly worried about it during our honeymoon. Also, depending on where you travel, expensive jewelry can make you a target for robberies. I’ve been to some shady parts of the world and made sure to never wear anything of value because it’s like having a big target sign on your back. We are honeymooning in Mexico and with the violence that has been going on (homicides, robberies, kidnappings) I will probably just wear silicone rings to err on the side of caution.

FH and I have inexpensive ($45-55 each) titanium bands for traveling. Even though our wedding bands and my engagement ring are insured, they are just insured for loss and theft not damage so they go into our home safe whenever we're on travel.

Picture 1 - FH's titanium band is the one on the left. His $665 14 karat gold wedding band is the one on the right.

Picture 2 - My rose gold and titanium band.
