Wear the Engagement Ring or just the Band?

Rachel, on March 25, 2019 at 1:35 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 44
My fiancé and I are traveling to Italy for honeymoon a couple days after the wedding. We’re going to Venice, Florence, Rome, Pompeii and Capri. I’ve read a lot about pickpocketers, especially in Naples. Has anyone had problems when traveling to any of these areas? The engagement ring is quite expensive and I don’t know if it would be a target for someone to try and steal. Thoughts?

I’ve been debating the same thing.. we are going to Hawaii on our honeymoon and plan on doing a lot of hiking/swimming etc... I’m leaning towards just wearing my band and leaving my engagement ring at home

I just travelled out of the country last week and opted to leave my engagement ring (wedding isn’t until January) at home as a safety precaution. My fiancé and I both plan to get silicone rings (~$30) that we can wear when we travel.

I've been married 30+ years and still leave my wedding set at home in the safe when we travel. I have a simple anniversary band that I wear on my left hand while on vacation. I'd hate to lose it too, but it doesn't have anywhere near the same sentimental and financial value as my wedding & engagement rings.

my fiancé and I are also going to Italy for honeymoon and I’ve been wondering what the safest thing is as far as the rings go. I like the idea of the silicon rings 👍🏼

We did Italy as well for our honeymoon and I opted to just wear the band. We were planning on doing some beach/water activities and I couldn’t imagine leaving the e-ring in an Airbnb! We try to blend in when we travel (limit whatever fancy pieces you wear, whether that’s jewelry or brands/labels) and learn a little of the language and have been very fortunate to not have trouble.

First off, your ring is beautiful! I haven’t traveled out of the country with mine yet, but the thought of it makes me nervous too. Maybe try finding a simple and inexpensive silicone band to wear while you’re away. They have some cute styles and that way you won’t have to worry and can enjoy your honeymoon. I feel like even a cheep fake diamond ring would make you stand out to thieves so the simpler the fake ring the better. Safe travels, and have fun!

I've been to Rome and there are a lot of pickpocketers. They distract you by trying to sell "junk" to you and there's usually a group of them that surround you. They target the tourist attractions and can be quite aggressive about it. I would not wear expensive jewelry when traveling.

Thank you! At first I didn’t see why I wouldn’t be able to wear it but I guess standing out as a tourist and having expensive jewelry on isn’t the greatest idea! I may just wear my wedding band which isn’t as flashy, or I do have some silicone rings I wear to work sometimes

We are going on a cruise and I have a silicone band I am going to wear when we go to the beach, excursions, etc. We are both leaving our bands and my e-ring in the safe provided in our room. That way we can still wear them to dinners/when we get back on the ship. I have heard horror stories of brides losing their engagement rings in the ocean and I am just not going to risk that. Ultimately I know our situations are a little different but do you feel comfortable leaving them in a safe if your room/place you are staying has one available?

When we go on our honeymoon we will likely leave our rings at home. I have seen inexpensive rings that you can purchase to wear and if something happens it's not too much of a loss.

I never wear my engagement ring when I travel. Leave it at home, it's not worth risking.

    A few tips!!!!
As someone who lives in Italy, it’s not as scary as you think. They will aim more for your backpack, fanny pack, things that are easily accessible by a zipper or a pocket. Keep your valuables in an inside pocket of an outfit, NEVER your back pocket. As a PP said, people will try to sell you things, or try and give you something for “free.” Do NOT trust them, but from them, or talk to them. Trust me, IGNORE THEM and keep walking.
As for your ring, it should be safe. If you want to wear it, you can go for it. Mine has been safe everywhere I’ve been. But if you’re really worried, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a cheap replacement or silicone ring on your vacation!

I have traveled to Italy both with others and on my own (and have been to each of your locations). If you are smart and stay away from the tourist traps you should be totally fine. Even when traveling alone I didn’t have any issues whatsoever with pickpockets...but again, be smart and do not wear clothes that will make you stand out.
With that being said, if you’re uncomfortable at all just take the precautions and wear a fake ring or get the silicone ones. Not worth the risk or anxiety!!
    enjoy!!! Italy is incredible!

I live in NYC & my e-ring is very large. Since we got engaged we’ve been to Eeastern Europe, Portugal & Cancún, Mexico. And the most dangerous place to wear my ring is by far NYC 😄 While I wouldn’t wear my ring if I’m doing something active outdoors, like swimming, rock climbing etc. I don’t get the fear of traveling abroad, especially if you’re going to established cities or resorts. These places are not more or less dangerous than any bigger US city.

I never understood this. Most people in any country get married. You are concerned somebody is going to rip the ring off your finger? Seems highly unlikely out of any other tourist in the area as well that they decide yes, you just got married lets take her ring. Why would you take it off as opposed to wearing it? I don't like talking to strangers anyway sooo I don't fall for the whole let me sell you something trap. It's like going to the mall, averting eyes with those weird lotion guys and/or saying no thank you and walking away lol. I am going to Italy with my family and FH this summer and I plan to wear my ring. Do whatever you wish, but I don't see the point if you don't take it off. Btw it's very pretty!

What about using wristlets for money/cards? I literally never keep anything but a lipstick or lipgloss in my front pockets. I will tell FH to keep his wallet in his front pocket rather than the back around touristy areas! What about phone's in back pockets? I am more concerned about pick pocketing than someone ripping a ring off my finger, which seems unlikely.

So in Italy the pickpocketers mainly target tourist areas and go for people wearing expensive clothing. If you’re worried I wouldn’t wear the ring, but I think you would be fine. Just don’t be flashy about it and dress normally. Maybe avoid wearing designer brand logos. I recommend you carry a crossbody bag or fanny pack with you and your FHs items. Honestly though I would recommend the same to someone traveling to the area of Atlanta that I live in 😂 I’ve been to Italy multiple times and never had a problem. The biggest risk of theft would be if you’ve got a shopping bag from a nice store (once again, probably the same here)

My fiancee and I are traveling to several different continents for our honeymoon. He is from Europe and I am from Los Angeles. We travel extensively. We both agree we are not wearing our real rings on the trip. My ring is fully insured against theft, damage, loss, basically anything that can happen to it. I'm still not going to wear it. We'll get cheap rings on Amazon for the trip. They won't look fancy or attractive to thieves.

    1. If you have an expensive looking ring, you are making yourself an attractive target to thieves. You are more likely to be robbed of not just the ring, but also your wallet and anything else you are carrying.

    2. As much as I will miss my real ring for those 3 weeks, I'd rather have it safe at home waiting for me. It would really ruin the whole trip for me if I lost the ring he put on my finger when he married me.

    I’m happy someone agrees 😃
I think it’s fear of unknown, as I usually hear it from people who don’t travel abroad. While there certainly are dangerous places in the world, it’s not a blanket statement the minute you leave US. Actually, on the list of top 50 most dangerous cities in the world, there are 0 European cities, however 4 US cities are on it, so... 🤷🏻‍♀️
