Virginia Name Change

Alyssa, on April 23, 2020 at 1:45 PM Posted in Virginia Planning 0 3

I just started the process of changing my name and have mailed in my paperwork to SS. I plan on moving my maiden name as a second middle name but after some research, it is unclear if Virginia allows this after marriage or if I have to submit a petition to the court to change my name. Has anyone done this?

My friend tried this in Texas and social security allowed it but the DMV did not. It’s worth a shot to see if they allow it.

I just did a quick Google search and it doesn't look like it's permissible, but once the government reopens you could call the BMV and ask if it's a possibility.

I did it the first time that I was married. But I dropped my original middle name and made my maiden name my middle name. I had no problems anywhere with that. I just had to take my marriage license to the dmv when I went to change my name on it. I live in Georgia but I would check with the courts and the dmv.
