Virgin Islands or Maui Honeymoon

Amy, on July 10, 2013 at 12:19 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

Hello,

FH doesn't have a passport and honestly I have no idea where mine is at the moment. We are at 86 days till the wedding, so there really isn't time to get new ones without rushing them. So, we are thinking about checking out the Virgin Islands or Hawaii for our honeymoon, since we don't need a passport to get there.

Has anyone done either or planning on doing either? I know Hawaii is super expensive, so any tips or websites or secret awesome deal package info would be greatly appreciated.

Or any other suggestions on places to go? I wanted to leave the country but I'm just not seeing it happen. Also, Our wedding is October and I've heard October is big storm season in the Caribbean, so maybe the Virgin Islands are not a good idea...

Thanks in advance for the tips and comments.

We are going to Kauai and just booked our cottage last week. There are some really good package deals on Expedia right now for Hawaii. Our place is not a hotel and has more of the bed and breakfast feel, which we like. It is an oceanfront cottage and is beautiful. They are very reasonably priced compared to the hotels in Kauai and you have access to all the amenities at the Kauai Hyatt Resort which is next door. The place we are staying is called Coastline Cottages. Good luck and hope you find the perfect place for your honeymoon!

I was unimpressed with St. Thomas. It's very westernized and commercialized. I've been to several Caribbean islands and St. Thomas was flat out disappointing.

I've heard good things about St. Croix though and St. John looks amazing. They're a little harder to get to, but it would be worth it IMO. With trip insurance I'd go to the Caribbean.

Hawaii will be a once in a lifetime trip when I finally do get there. No time like the honeymoon to do a big vacation and splurge a little.

We just did Hawaii for 5 days/5 nights for about $4200 (we could have spent at least $300 less if we didn't splurge on eating out, souvenirs and shopping.) We stayed in Honolulu because that's where H is from. We got great deals on airfare through Expedia, stayed at a vacation rental that overlooked the water, took a day trip to the Big Island to Volcano National Park (highly recommended!!) and it was incredible. I'd love to go back and see some of the other islands.

As far as another option, you can travel to Puerto Rico without a passport and most people speak English there. Beautiful beaches, rich history in Old San Juan, the rain forest for some adventure, incredible food... just another place you can put on your list. Smiley smile

Maui is awesome! You can get a condo and save on breakfast. That would be my first choice. I have been to the Virgin Islands as well. St Johns is beautiful, but getting over there can be very pricey!

Mama Bear, do you have a link to the expedia deal you used for your trip? I'm looking on expedia but I'm not finding anything that sends you to those cottages.

on Maui and had nothing but great things to say about it! It's more secluded than staying on Kaamapalli, but they loved it.

I lived on St. Thomas for a year and I would recommend that you go to Maui or St John instead. Much nicer. St. John is easily accessible from St. Thomas- just a cab ride to the ferry at Redhook and over to St. Johns. Many hotels will coordinate transportation as well...

    Good luck and congrats!

We are going to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon and we, too, just got an amazing deal on Expedia. PM me if you want more info about PR!!

I've been to St. John and it was incredible, I can't speak for the rest of the islands though. And I've never been to Hawaii, but I can't imagine it would be anything less than amazeballs!

Randi, are there fees for working with a travel agent? I've never quite understood how that worked...

Amy - Here is the link to where I found the cottages. It will give you reviews from people who have stayed there and they have the link directly to the cottages website as well. I didn't book the cottage thru Expedia, but just know that they are having sales on Hawaii trips right now. I emailed the cottage directly and she gave me a really good deal. We are staying in the Turtle Bay Oceanfront King Cottage. I cant wait! Hope this helps your search Smiley smile

    Hi Amy,

You can definitely go to the Virgin Islands without a passport. I went to St. John and LOVED it. Granted it is a quiet island for the most part, the beaches were gorgeous and there is a nice small-town feel with restaurants and shops. Depending on your budget, the US Virgin Islands can be a little pricey. I would suggest the Westin St. John. In October you do run the risk of hurricanes. As far as Hawaii is concerned, there is a great hotel chain that is running a fantastic sale right now. They are offering every 4th night free and free buffet breakfast. There are no all-inclusive resorts. Feel free to contact me, I would be happy to work up a price for you. Congrats on your engagement!

I love the British VI, but you'll need a passport. You have plenty of time though, don't you?

    Celia-

I have been blessed to be able to work and live throughout the Caribbean and the BVI are my favorite as well. The Baths/Devils Bay being my favorite beach anywhere. Worth the passport hassle... Smiley smile
