Videographer, yes or no?

Lisa, on April 5, 2024 at 3:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 10
Looking at prices for videographers, and they are quite pricey, trying to determine if it would be worth it or not, does anybody have any input?

There are budget options. Get a tripod to use with a newer iPhone that has good enough quality that many current Hollywood films are being made with them. Or invest in a GoPro camera that can be used to record other events in your lives such as holidays and just because. That would be used with a tripod as well.

A pro is that it captures loved ones who may not be around forever and has a different purpose than photos. There are not many cons to skipping it

We didn’t bother. We didn’t see ourselves wanting to watch it again, and I’ve never known anyone who watched it more than once. We thought we’d get more value spending the money elsewhere.

My husband and I initially didn't plan to book a videographer but once we postponed due to COVID, we ended up changing our minds. We love our wedding video!! It's totally a personal preference though - take a look at some of the example videos on videographers websites. If you had a similar video from your wedding, do you think you'd watch it more than once or twice? If not, then skip the videographer. But if so, there are cheaper videographers out there that you could book (such as, check with local colleges to see if any photo or film students are available). You could also ask them to record just the ceremony, or limit their hours overall to help save money and still get a wedding video.

I did and it was 100% worth it. With our video and all the raw footage we got, there are so many things photos don't capture. I can see my husband taking a deep breath as I walked down the aisle. I can see my cousins teaching each other silly dance moves while I was in the bathroom. I can see my great aunt, who probably won't be with us much longer. I can see my parents crying while having a slow dance. The day goes by so fast and you will miss so much. Without video, those moments are gone forever. With it, you can re-live your day as much as you want and show it to future generations. To me it was worth every penny.

I was also debating the pros and cons. Then I found a videographer that was just starting out, and was willing to JUST video the ceremony and any "special moments " right after it (all the family photos) We absolutely love it. I especially am glad I did it for 2 reasons- because our wedding was on the beach, I was "hidden" in the bridal room until they were ready for me to walk the aisle (so to speak) so I never saw any of my bridal party walking. The second - and bonus - reason was because my precious hubby totally forgot that he was miked up, so every comment he made to my son (the best man) was picked up. It's the most heartwarming part, hearing him joke around and then, when seeing me, saying "she's glowing " and "is this really happening, I waited so long for someone like her". Sigh. Worth every penny.

I vote absolutely yes! We had booked a fabulous (and yes, rather expensive) videographer for our DW. But then I kept reading peoples comments on the forum about not having one and not regretting it; so at the last minute, we canceled the videographer. We ended up having a local husband/wife team videotape just the ceremony for us. And now we really wish we had stayed with the original videographer! It was so great seeing little moments captured that we otherwise wouldn’t have seen. And videography captures things in a way photography can’t. We’ve watched the video (and especially the raw, unedited videos) so many times over the past year! They captured some really funny things that I love rewatching. We both really wish we had video of the entire event now. The way I see it is, it’s better to err on the side of cautious. I would much rather have a video that I don’t watch often, than to not have the video and regret it.

If you can responsibly afford it, it's worth it IMO. Photos and video are really the only things you will have to keep from your wedding forever. Even if you don't watch it often, it will become even more precious as the years go on, loved ones are no longer with us, etc.

I vote yes. We were really on the fence about it, but watched some wedding videos that we loved; so many details about the ceremony and day are captured, clips from guests‘ best wishes, etc. We recorded our proposals and have watched the videos several times, plus shared with family and friends. I think it is a good investment.

Some sort of video recording should be considered, especially if you easily forget what you had for breakfast the previous morning. But it may not be so go to have the video contract that reduces 6 hours of video down to a 3 minute highlights video. Photos give you that type of view of your wedding.

Yes, I agree that if you're going to get a video, go all in for the full ceremony and raw footage if they offer that.
