Videographer or just a photographer?

Brooke, on February 20, 2019 at 10:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 25

I am having a bit of a dilemma trying to decide whether or not to have both a photographer and videographer, or only a photographer... I am trying to save money where I can, but I can't decide to include a videographer or not. I would love to have a clip of the important scenes from our wedding to watch in the years to come, but will photos be just as good? What are y'all doing, both or just one?

Both 100%!!! You’ll never be able to relive those moments in photos like you can in a video! That’s one regret you don’t want to have and something you’ll never be able to redo!

    Best wishes!

I am doing both. A friend got married a couple of years ago, and put their wedding highlight video on FB afterwards. O...M...G....I had never seen something like that before, and I LOVED IT!!! I knew then (this was before I was even engaged) that I HAD TO HAVE ONE for my wedding, lol. It was just a 3-4 minute highlight video of their entire day set to a song of their choosing with their vows edited over parts of it (I cried it was so beautiful). Therefore, when we started planning I told FH this is something I have to have and that is that, lol. I'm paying for everything anyways, so he really gets no say in the matter. Anyways, I was able to find one in my area for $900. I reviewed his website and reviews, found out that he has an editing style that matches my vision, and is a great price (easily $200-$1,000 cheaper than all others in my area). If you decide to do both, just research and compare prices. I used WW's vendor search to find ours.

PS- Since you hired the photographer I suggested, check out the videographer I hired haha. His name is Chris Lafferty w/ Lucky Life Creations. I honestly haven't even met him yet, but he was super responsive and friendly. He is based out of Norfolk, I think.

We are doing both. Our photographer is great, but no photo can capture the song I walk down the aisle to, my wife reading her vows, or the giggles of our nieces on the dance floor.

Could you decrease the amount of time you use the vendors? You could have them at the cermony and part of the reception. They don’t have to record every little thing. You can get pictures from your guests and family for everything else

There was another discussion similar to this one that I just posted on. Here is what I told that person... hope this helps!

I personally say you defiantly want a photographer but the videographer you can do without.

At first I wanted a videographer because I like the videos people post but then I think to myself how often did I go back and rewatch somebody's wedding? -- NEVER! My aunt had her wedding videoed and she never goes back to watch it. That's what I thought about, that I won't really be watching the video that often to spend the money for a videographer.

But photos, people love looking at photos. Photographers can capture all the moments a videographer would, just not moving or sound involved obviously haha With a photographer you'll have the prints to look back on, albums and you may even want a canvas or a big photo printed to hang in the house or something.

I chose to do both. I had some extra money from SPIFF's I get from work (bonuses for selling certain product) so I went ahead and booked it without talking to FH. I thought he would be a little upset with me so it was the "easier to ask for forgiveness later" thing lol. Well fast forward a few weeks and friends of ours posted their wedding highlight video on facebook and he showed me and was like "babe we have to do this!" ---I then told him I had already booked a videographer lol.

It was very important for me to have both, so important that this was the first vendor I looked for after locking in the venue. I agree with pp that you’ll rarely watch a full ceremony video but I absolutely love highlight videos and would watch those over and over. I was able to tailor our package and negotiate price a little bit. We removed the fully edited ceremony video, agreed to just take the raw footage of ceremony and speeches, and put a big emphasis on the highlight video. When looking at their work decide if you want a video with voice over or just music. I wanted voice over to capture some of the huge moments and I think I’m looking forward to this more than the actual pictures!

We only had a photographer and don't regret it for a second. We both KNEW there was no realistic vision of us wanting to watch a wedding video later, so what was the point? Our photographer was great as it was. Now, had we had EXTRA FUNDS, sure, we would have gone for the video, but it definitely wasn't something we wanted to budget for.

I meant to make my original comment in the other thread about the same topic. I’m not sure how it ended up over here.

We are having both. But we will just have the videographer for 2 hours. We really just wanted the ceremony with some B roll footage to help the video. I debated for awhile about doing the videographer but my fiancé really wanted it. I think it will be nice to have because our families won’t be at our Paris ceremony and it will be nice to be able to show them.

I would love both but can only afford one and I decided on pictures . I am looking into still recording the ceremony with a tripod stand or a company that sends out cameras for the party but that is a last minute add on not a must have .

Given our budget, we decided just to have a photographer. I also am not a fan of watching myself on video, and I definitely couldn’t justify spending $1000 or more for something I wouldn’t even want to watch.

We got a photographer, but couldn’t afford both no way.
I set up a tripod at back of the isle and had my brother hit record right before it started.
He also made sure the spotlight dances and speeches got recorded. My brother was a rock star that day and all i asked him to be sure to do was hit record before walking down the isle with my mom. Its not high quality movie like, but it my wedding! And I’m so glad we have it.
So if you don’t have wiggle room, it’s a thought.

Both! Photos are a no brainer, but video is the only way I can relive those fleeing precious moments as others have mentioned. You can definitely go for more abbreviated package though. I'm hiring just enough photography to capture the first look, portraits, ceremony, and reception program which occurs during the first 1-2 hours of reception. You can definitely skip recording the getting ready and dancing / full reception. If you're not doing a first look then you can just capture the ceremony and reception program for just a few hours, assuming the program occurs during the beginning of the reception. Same with video. For me though, I'm hiring a processional for the ceremony only because i want a nice edited video, and setting up a tripod for reception speeches.

    Hello Brooke,

I completely understand your dilemma. My husband and faced the same issue and unfortunately, we opted not to have a video and I regret this on a daily basis.

However, I would like to share a product that a friend used for their wedding that I completelySmiley heart . There is a pretty awesome product out there call Weddeo that allows you to capture all the fun moments from "YES" to "I DO". The packages are affordable (starting at $199) and this gives you full control. Some packages provide you with cameras so that you can allow trusted members of your family or even friends to record your wedding from multiple views. So you don't have just one perspective but three amazing views of your wedding. Another great feature is the mobile app that all of your guests can use to upload video clips and photos that they take at your wedding. Weddeo collects all of the footage from the cameras and app, creates a unique, ready-to-share video of your wedding, and you get all of the raw footage to keep. So, no more missing out on any of your most memorable moments. Check it out and see if it is for you: https://bit.ly/2S6llfg

I hope this helps you and save you some money as well!

I’m just doing a photographer. My parents still have their vhs 📼 of their wedding 30 years ago and they don’t have any interest in changing it over to dvd. I knew that I would never change it over to newer/more popular technology in the future.

I was just going to do a photographer until I started watching “Marryoke” videos and decided I must have one. So fun for the reception. Our videographer is going to do both the more traditional highlight reel as well as the Marryoke” video. Almost more excited now for the videos over the photos!

I personally don’t care for videographers and the highlight videos. I don’t see my self watching slow motion video of me putting my necklace on. We set up a camera in the back of our venue and recorded the ceremony, the roasts and the dances home video style and it was perfect. That’s all we needed and we loved it.
