Venue won’t give money back

Maisey, on May 28, 2020 at 4:38 PM Posted in Michigan Planning 0 1
Hey!

So our wedding is suppose to be August 30,2020 but we are feeling uncomfortable about it since most guests live in California. Our venue is allowing postponements but we don’t want to postpone only cancel and do something smaller with only family.
Has anyone had to deal with this? Or is there a way to somehow get our money back?
They are allowing us to find someone else to take over our contract within a year of our date so that’s the only option we see. But, no idea how to find another bride who wants this venue.
Not sure why they aren’t being accommodating with just giving our money back due to a pandemic... Smiley sad

Hi Maisey! Unfortunately health concerns & pandemics were not written in to most people's original contracts - in which case if the venue is able to uphold their end of the contract, they won't legally owe you a refund on non-refundable deposits. How much money would you lose if you decided to cancel today? Can they apply your existing deposits to a smaller celebration on your original wedding date?

Will they allow you out of the contract if they can fill your new date? You could also share the news in local Facebook groups to see if there are any brides eager for your date!

Here are a few other discussions you can check out where other couples have shared their experiences asking about non-refundable deposits:
