usa Locations Similar to Switzerland

eiramaek, on April 14, 2021 at 5:33 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

Since Switzerland is out of the question for our honeymoon this October (Thanks COVID Smiley cry ), we're trying to decide somewhere similar to go in the states. Any suggestions?! Looking for specific locations versus just state recommendations. Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

Any mountainous area: Cascades or Sierras on the West Coast, Rockies in the central states

What about Switzerland made you want to go there? Which type of landscapes?

I would suggest Lake Tahoe or in and around Mount Rainier (and the west side of the Cascades in general) for the alpine experience. The town of Leavenworth, Washington, is a Bavarian-esque village that is fun to visit. I know Bavaria is not in Switzerland, but again, Alps. Smiley smile

Leavenworth is a gorgeous city year round and was built specifically as a recreation of Switzerland and the Alps.

Well, their website says the inspiration was Bavaria, Germany, but maybe they need to edit that?

Stowe, Vermont. Beautiful- it will be stunning in the fall! Large mountains, snow, clear air, Bavarian architecture. I know that’s not really Switzerland but similar vibe. The Von Trapp family relocated there and there is a resort right in Stowe that is pretty cool.

Vail, Colorado, has a European vibe.

Park City, UT, feels like an upscale Western mining town feel with cute boutiques.

We've both just always really wanted to go! The beautiful mountain landscapes, the lakes & villages, the history & culture, etc. Not to mention their world famous chocolate (Toblerone, I'm looking at you! Smiley winking ). And it's silly but I absolutely love this particular breed of sheep that originates in Switzerland (Valais Blacknose.. Look them up, they're ADORABLE!). So much so that when I was studying abroad in Ireland back in 2015 and visited Scotland, I made a 3 1/2 hour trip out to this farm in the middle of basically nowhere because I had researched and got connected with a farmer there who had purchased some from a farmer in Switzerland lol. At that time, they were the only sheep of that breed in the UK. So I'm looking forward to visiting the wooly buds again but in the actual area where they originate Smiley smile I know a lot of people fancy going somewhere warm & tropical for their honeymoon, but I was born & raised in Florida so I've had my fill, and my husband (we eloped on our OG date last October, just postponed our wedding & honeymoon to this October given everything) isn't too big on hot weather destinations himself.

I would recommend looking into Lake Tahoe. Woods, mountain and the lake. It’s absolutely beautiful there and they do have a few cute charming towns (Truckee and Tahoe City are my favorite) but that won’t be as charming as Switzerland villages.
    No sheep though!

I've visited Mount Rainier while on a trip to Seattle & Portland, but that's about it. My husband hasn't been to that area at all (we live in the northeast), so the West Coast is definitely in the running. Thanks for the suggestion!

I should've mentioned we want to avoid going anywhere too close to where we live now, which is in the northeast (Upstate NY). Will have to look more into the Appalachian Mountains though. Thanks! Smiley smile

Germany is also right at the top of our list for places we want to go someday, so if Leavenworth is a good mix of both, we might be sold lol.

We love Vermont, but since we live in Upstate NY, we want to avoid places in the northeast. I should've mentioned where we were located in my original post lol. My fault!

When I was doing some research a couple weeks ago, I came across Vail, CO a bunch. Colorado in general is somewhere we're interested in going since neither of us has ever been before. Park City, UT looks lovely as well. Thanks for the recommendations!

Vail is pretty special (and expensive)! ❄️ There’s something unique about Park City too—more laid back and smaller feeling. And some fun tours and activities at the Utah Olympic Park.

Oh! I don’t know which ski resort is close to Estes Park in CO but Stanley Mansion is a hotel you can stay at that inspired Steven King’s The Shining! Their ghost tour is fun. But heavy snow in winter can close roads to mountains in CO so find out about that. I don’t think Park City UT has that problem.
