Upgrade chairs or use the free/venue chairs?

Alex, on May 8, 2024 at 6:01 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 11

Hello,

I'm getting married in a beautiful Spanish-style courtyard. The venue comes with free chairs but I hate the look of them, they look very corporate with the grey color. See pics below.

I'm debating renting more elegant bistro chairs (example below), but the cost would be $1800 for the rental PLUS the venue would charge an additional $500 to move their chairs. So $2300 total.

I know that guests won't care about the chairs & in my heart I know it's not the wisest financial decision from a practical standpoint. But my thinking is that the chairs will be in almost every picture and also take away from the beauty of the tablescape and the venue itself. I worry it will bother me forever when looking back at photos.

What do you think, do the current grey chairs bother you? Should I upgrade or stick with the free chairs?

Thank you!

I actually kind of like them tbh. They look good with the white tablecloth and colorful flowers. Maybe go big and dramatic with the floral arrangements? Some bright reds and pinks would be pretty, like poppies

Thanks for your input! Good to know they are not an eye sore to everyone haha. I will be doing colorful flowers (reds, pinks, greens) but in the form of bud vase and flower frog arrangements.

Ooh, maybe do a lot of arrangements and punctuate with colorful candlesticks? Look up colorful minimalism on pinterest and that's basically the vision

OK, I will preface this by saying that I am a huge supporter of changing out unsightly chairs at venues. However, I don’t think your chairs are an issue. They are so nondescript that they kind of blend in and you don’t even notice them. And where you said you are decorating with bright colors, I think they will kind of disappear into the background even more. Also, they will be much more comfortable for your guests than the bistro chairs. personally, I wouldn’t spend the money to change them out.

Honestly the existing chairs are a lot more comfortable than the bistros. Especially since some guests will be seated longer than others socializing instead of dancing. As long as guests are comfortable sitting, they don’t care what the chairs look like and they are very elegant. On the wedding day, you won’t even care what they look like, nor will your guests. Save your money for something guests actually notice and remember such as food, bar, dj.

As someone with major back issues, the included chairs look SO much more comfortable and stable than the bistro chairs, and honestly, I think the included chairs look better. Save your money!

Those bistro chairs look uncomfortable. If esthetics are your main concern, I’m not so sure they are a such a significant upgrade, either.

I agree that the provided chairs are more comfortable. You could tie something around them though, to make them more palatable visually! Google "chair sashes" for tons of inspiration. Upgrade chairs or use the free/venue chairs? 4

Honestly I would leave them as is and save your money for something guests will notice and remember. The cost does add up. Guests honestly only pay attention to chairs long enough to find the tables and only care about comfort.

We attended a renewal a few years ago that was presented as a “full/real wedding” following an elopement that had its own issues with guests upset that they were not told the truth that the couple was already married. But the major thing guests had an issue with at the reception was that the chairs (similar to first pictures) were covered in spandex that was not the correct size. Because they shifted on their own and made already comfortable chairs that were not ugly uncomfortable to sit on, a good number of guests removed the spandex from at least the bottom. There was no dancing and it was an extravagant afternoon luncheon at the couple’s parents’ church so many traditional elements were cut that would be seen at a community center type venue. Even just for 3 hours of eating and socializing, the chairs could have been left alone. The photographer never filmed the chairs when it was all said and done.
