TTC - how long did it take for you to get pregnant

Renata, on April 14, 2014 at 2:22 PM Posted in Married Life 2 40

We started TTC right after our wedding. I was just wondering... those of you who have kids or pregnant, how long did it take you to get pregnant while actively trying (considering ovulation days, charting or whatever else you did). I'm asking because if I don't get pregnant right away i'm going to freak out right away (because i will think that something is wrong) so I'm trying to see what the realistic scenario is so this doesn't happen. I'm going to be watching this thread so I can know what NOT to do....lol. My family teases us b/c we are seemingly "anti-kid" haha. That's not the case....we are just not looking for that so soon after marriage (call us selfish...eh lol) Smiley smile))

Good luck in your ventures though Smiley smile)

Renata, the more you freak out and try, the less successful you will be. Just bang your husband a lot, have a ton of drunk sex and see how it turns out. Every single person I know who actively tried charting their fertility was only successful when they quit and just relaxed about it.

Enjoy being married and all that entails.

Good Luck to you! I wish I had some advice but I don't Smiley sad I just know from my family gene line that it doesn't take a lot of work for the women in my family to get pregnant! Ha, the only thing I have to worry about is early menopause. My Mom's side has gone through it by 33.. so we'll see if I take after them or my Dad, won't know until we hit that point!

Agreed, the more you think about it, the harder it will be!

Every person is different, for my sister, it took one try. My SIL, it took her ten months! Just focus on you and hubby and it will happen.

While I haven't started trying yet it seems to me that a reasonable amount of time before you need to panic is roughly 6-8 months. This is just based off other's experiences and my basic understanding of the biology involved.

Some get it on the first try, others need more. But I wouldn't rush to the doctor right off the bat.

Keep in mind the average amount of time it takes a couple to conceive is nine months. Also, stress and anxiety can harm fertility. So I'd slow your roll - hovering over pee sticks and freaking out isn't going to help.

In the meantime, the two of you should go see your ob/gyn for preconception counseling. Your gyno can talk with you about charting, your likely most fertile days, any immediately obvious fertility issues, whether you should consider genetic testing (say, if either of you carries the Tay-Sachs gene), and if you are behind on any immunizations. (For example, you can't get the chicken pox vaccine during pregnancy, but if you catch chicken pox while pregnant it can be very harmful to the fetus.)
You should also start taking a prenatal vitamin ASAP - you should have a healthy reserve of folic acid in your system to help prevent defects like spina bifida.

Most of my friends have had babies and out of about 10 only one got pregnant right away. Most took 6 months to a year, and these are girls in their late 20's early 30's. And I agree with SunshineJenn, the more you stress, the harder it is. Just relax, have sex a lot, have sex on your ovulation days and give it a few months.

Nothing scientific I can input, but almost every woman I know had been trying to lose weight when it happened. maybe eating better and being active makes your body more ready? who knows! lol. good luck!

What SunshineJenn said - and if you were on BC prior, it could take a little while for your hormones to go back to normal.

First try, I was 28 at the time, and actively charting. However, I was ok with it taking awhile. Doesn't that just about figure?

DH and I would like to TTC next year and I'll be 37. I'm afraid it won't be that easy. I chart to avoid on fertilityfriend.com

Look at me sexy like and I get pregnant lol. Both my boys were oops.

My sister has been trying for 2 years, but she has a fertility problem. And my fbil and their wives have been trying. Many ob/gyn won't send you to a specialist until after one year of trying.

Stress doesn't help, have fun practicing Smiley smile

I talked to my doc because we are TTC as soon as the ring is on his finger (since, well, I already have one ring on mine, ha). I joked to my doc that I needed to know how babies were made...luckily, she got the joke. She said to just have a lot of sex and to put all other thoughts out of my mind. I'm "older" so will be watched a little more closely, but she said 6 months would go by before they would even TALK to me about anything else b/c it easily takes that long, even for "young" mothers.

She suggested every other day...and two of my friends who are both on second kids said that method worked for them. But I agree with all the others above who say, just don't stress about it for awhile and let nature take its course for at least a solid 6 months or more. Good luck!

Our plan is for me to start taking pre-natal vitamins in the next week or two since we are planning to start TTC in June. I'll also be talking to my doctor next week, like Shannon suggested to make sure everything seems to be in order. Once June rolls around, we'll just have sex every 2-3 days and see how things go.

Haha i wish i could have drunken sex, i don't drink. I quit smoking that's about it, I don't take BC. I'm going to my gyno tomorrow to discuss things i should be aware of (diet, vitamins, etc). Thanks ladies.

I have been sort of charting on fertilityfriend.com but only because I wanted to track my menses. I don't take temperatures every morning so it gives me only estimated information.

It took my sister over 2 years for her first one and 2 months for her second one. For her first one they were stressed, freaking out, all that. For her second, they weren't and it happened. I wouldn't freak out right away.

Renata, that's a very good thing to do. It's not a bad thing to let your doctor know that you'll be trying and that way they can make healthy recommendations for you. I personally know that before we TTC, I want to lose some additional weight just to be healthier for a baby. I know you gain weight during pregnancy, so it'd be something I'd work on before get pregnant with help from my doctor. I'd also want my FH to work on his smoking addiction before even TTC.. :/ urgh.

Glad to hear you're going to the gyno. I would suggest you take DH with you - after all, it's a two-person project. And the doc will have questions about his medical and family history as well.

It took me until the 3rd month the first time, and until the 2nd month the third time. (Second pregnancy was a complete accident, in spite of using several methods of birth control at once!) And we didn't use ovulation days, charting, or anything else other than just having sex regularly.) But apparently the average is about 6 months.
