Train or no train?

Michael, on May 18, 2022 at 2:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 34

I think a sweep or chapel train would work best.

Did anyone select a dress based on the specific train? Did the train work out okay in the ceremony?

I knew I did not want a train so I made sure to select a style that could be easily altered to achieve that. My dress originally had a slight sweep train.

It seems like a lot of the dresses I have seen posted have longer trains so I am sure others can give you the feedback on how it went. 🙂

My favorite part of my dress is the train. It's either chapel or cathedral length (not sure which), and it has sparkle and gorgeous lace details. Our ceremony is going to be a full Catholic mass, so there's a bit of moving around involved, but most of that is pretty even-paced. I'll probably have my coordinator fluff it before I walk down the aisle and then my MOH will fluff it again once we're at the altar. After the ceremony, I'm planning to bustle the train so I can dance.

Some designers have dresses that don't have trains, or the shop would be able to order a dress that normally has a train to be made without one.

You surely make a good endorsement for the longer train. Sounds like a wonderful dress. I can imagine the Catholic weddings could inspire the longer train too.

It definitely helps if the dress starts somewhere near the length you want. Sweeping changes might not end up working out as hoped.

Absolutely! It turned out exactly as I had hoped it would. It was still $250 for alterations, but that was more because the skirt had 7 layers than because of the difficulty.

In all fairness, I'm a sucker for a long, dramatic, and elaborate train, so I might be a touch biased 😂

My dress has a very long cathedral train, but it wasn’t even the longest train I tried on! I’m not worried about it though- my MOH and I both worked in bridal together for 3.5 years, so I know she’s an expert at fluffing it out! We’re getting married indoors, so I was so excited to have the dramatic element on my dress

That's great. I can imagine the excitement. And you know your MOH has learned the task well.

I had a train! It was SO beautiful and dramatic in photos, but I won't lie, it is a bit of a pain to move around in. That said, the photos in it are so gorgeous, and many other elements of the dress made it a supremely impractical dress - not just the train, so honestly, I don't regret a thing. When else will I get to wear one? This is one of my favourite photos showing how dramatic it was:

    Yes Rosie,

That gown looks fantastic. Definitely there is no opportunity to wear such a gown than on the wedding day. Another vote for the cathedral train.

A chapel train is beautiful and dramatic but I think one of the biggest things to think of is after the ceremony. Do you get a separate reception dress or figure out what type of bustle works best with a longer/lacier train if you go that route?

Sure. But like Rosie said, this is the only time you get to wear a dress with such a train.

This is going to sound terrible but I don't even know/remember what the back of my dress looks like! I had such a hard time choosing dresses that I literally have tons of angles of all the dresses except for the one that I selected. I know it does have a train, but I'm not sure of the design or the material.

But one thing I did add/do differently was my veil. Instead of a traditional hair piece veil or over the face veil, I got a cape veil. This will definitely compliment my train. So excited to finally see what everything looks like (I made changes to my dress 2 weeks after purchase) together!

    Hi Crystal,

Yep. It is kind of funny you don't know the back of your dress but you answered the question. The train was not a big concern for you.

I have a fairly long train and honestly that’s my favorite part of the dress. Definitely adds the drama and aesthetic I was looking for. We see how it lands on Saturday!!

    Thanks for sharing this.

Great to realize your ceremony is this week. How splendid to see that you have planned your dress to build the drama and aesthetic. Our weddings should be a grand event when possible.

No train was non negotiable. Unfortunately dresses are impossible to find without one, and I’m on the shorter side and top heavy so I would have to get something custom made no matter what.

That is so true. So few of the dresses come without a train that it then is even harder to find the right one that already has no train. Hope everything is working out well for your dress.
