The Sweetest Part of Planning: Cake Tasting!

Nicole, on January 6, 2020 at 1:54 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

Hi all 2020 brides! Can you believe we're already here? Let's talk about cake! My FH and I have our first cake tasting this Saturday. My FH is extremely picky when it comes to cake, so I'm hoping there will be something that we both can agree on! Do any other 2020 brides have their tastings coming up soon? Anyone who has already had their cake tastings with any advice for those of us who haven't hit this milestone yet?

Take REALLY small bites and don’t taste anything more than you have to lol. It’s so easy to just get caught up trying things and to not realize how much you’re eating because it’s just a series of bites and it’s not portioned out... I felt SO sick after ours 😂 I’d recommend eating really healthy (like high protein) before you go, and having another healthy meal ready to go when you get home. After we did ours we went for a long walk to try to walk off some of the blah feeling from all the sugar, and then once we had a big protein-heavy dinner I felt much better.

We just had our cake tasting last month (aside from one we had months before that didn't quite wow us). Everything was soooo good and we ended up picking our flavors VERY quickly! Make sure to bring some water (our bakery gave us complimentary bottles during the tasting) and don't feel like you have to eat all that's served. The samples we had were amazing and we definitely wanted to finish it all, but our baker told us she'd box it up for us to take home so we wouldn't gorge ourselves Smiley xd

We ended up choosing two tiers of chocolate cake with dulce de leche filling and one tier of vanilla cake with strawberry compote filling, all with cream cheese icing!

Such good advice! My normal diet is already SUPER high in protein (at least 155 g per day!), so that shouldn't be a problem. I definitely am afraid of feeling gross afterward! I have a major sweet tooth, so while I'm looking forward to my tasting, I'm also worried that my discipline won't kick in! Haha. Planning a walk after is a great idea!

We did our cake tasting on the earlier side and had so much fun! We took notes after each piece we tried and wrote down a "yes/no/maybe" vote to figure out which ones were our overwhelming favorites. I'd recommend eating a light but healthy meal before and after so you don't feel too gross. I'd also recommend not eating the full taste when you first try it - if you need to break some ties at the end of the tasting, you'll have a bit of cake left to come back to.

Yes! Water! Definitely a great idea to help not gorge but to also cleanse the palate between flavors. I love cream cheese icing but my FH will not touch anything with cream cheese in it...and is pretty adverse to frosting in general. That's going to be the biggest problem for us! Haha. I'm interested in how our bakery presents their options; I've seen slices served and bite size portions served at tastings, so I'm not sure what to expect! Thank you for the advice!

Great advice about not eating the whole piece the first time around! You don't want to have to rely on just what you remember the taste was...and it's always nice to end with a bite of your favorite!

Haha, just try to be conscious of the fact that when you’re having “just one bite” of all these different options and you’re having it all in a relatively short timespan and you’re excited and caught up in the moment, you’re probably eating way more than you realize :p just don’t wait until you feel nauseous to slow down hahaha, start out slow 😂

Have fun too! It was a great time honestly even though I felt gross afterwards hahaha

Cake and dessert tasting was so much fun for us! But as someone who does not eat a lot of sweets, I left with a major sugar high lol. My best advice is to taste at least one bite of everything before you finish something off. We couldn't finish everything provided at our tasting, so I'm glad we did small bites of everything first, otherwise, we would have missed out on some stuff at the end. We were just too full to finish it all. Have fun!

Ask if you can take any home! It's easy to want to eat everything there but I agree, take small bites! We ended up having an easy time picking what we wanted for the cake, but our baker let us take home the rest of what we didn't eat. We had multiple small pieces of pake and small cups of icing to take home and we got to enjoy them. We were really glad we were able to do that because every time we tasted the samples we were so happy we picked the flavors we did!

The cake tasting appointment was mine & FH's favorite part of wedding planning!! Our baker has 12 different flavors of cakes she does for wedding cakes, but we just decided to taste 6 since we knew we probably weren't going to choose the others. Like others have said, water is a must! Everything is so sweet so it's nice to be able to have something to wash the sweetness away. Our baker provided water for us at the appointment. Also, don't feel like you have to eat everything they give you. Our baker made 12 huge cupcakes for us (2 of each flavor), and she let us take the rest home, which was really nice! FH & I have talked several times recently about how we can't wait to eat our cakes again (we're doing a wedding cake & groom's cake)!

My baker is my aunt, so we didn't do a formal tasting. She made us a small cake of the cake we wanted to try for our anniversary cake which was vanilla cake with blueberry filling; this was a treat for my FH because he loves blueberries. Then she gave us samples of 4 different cupcake flavors and I picked red velvet, carrot cake and then she is going to do cupcakes of the vanilla with blueberry filling. Along with pecan tasies and 2 types of cookies. I didn't taste the pecans or cookies. I trust her to do a good job. The dessert is our wedding present from my aunt so we are super excited not to have that expense to worry about. And now i am hungry thinking about cake lol.

I love cake! We really enjoyed our red velvet cake with semi-naked buttercream frosting. Be sure to take your time and don't feel pressured to make an immediate decision! It's an important one

Semi-naked is our jam! Just enough frosting without being overwhelming. Luckily, I've had the bakery's cakes before (they do cake decorating events monthly....soo much fun!) and they are DE-LISH!!! Just have to find a flavor my FH can enjoy as well.

So, we had our cake tasting today. So tasty! Of course, my plain-palate-Patty fiancé chose the vanilla and marble cakes with whipped cream frosting. BUT!!!!! We actually won our entire cake through a contest our bakery put on this week! So instead of having a single tier with kitchen cakes for guests, we ordered a full 4 tier cake...and only have to pay the delivery fee! I’m so grateful that it’s one less thing we have to pay for. Since we get 4 tiers, my FH gave me the top tier for the flavor I liked best: strawberry cake with cream cheese and raspberry jam filling. I’m beyond thrilled and can’t wait to see what it looks like in July!
