Thailand Honeymoon Help

katherine, on December 8, 2016 at 3:34 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

We first went to a Travel Agent to help establish a budget for a 10 day honeymoon to Thailand. She came back with an itinerary of about $10k for the both of us. We thought it could be much more than cost effective if we took control, however, we need some help!

We'd be looking to arrive in May of 2017 and visit Bangkok, Chang Mai and Koh Samui Does anyone have any tips, tricks, need-to-knows, must do's (or don'ts)? The one aspect we liked about the travel agent's services was the fact that it included a tour guide/driver/transportation to and from hotels and airports but not have to pay so much.

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated!

    Ridiculous.

My honeymoon was 30 days in 4 countries in SE Asia, and we spent less than that without without staying in hostels, doing plenty of shopping and eating at the best restaurants everywhere we visited.

I did some research about Thailand before deciding to do a minimoon and do the big trip later.. 10K for Thailand sounds high to me. You could stay in 4/5 star hotels for under $100/per night there. For 10 nights that's $1,000. Flights are maybe $1000 each. I'm not sure where the other $7000 in spending is coming from. I think you should be able to do it for half that. Spend some time on tripadvisor and other travel sites, do a lot of research before you book anything. Did the travel agent give you a price breakdown? The Thai currency is worth MUCH less than the US dollar so I'm just curious where all that money was going.

Yes the agent said this is includes some tours, hotel and air from city to city. i just keep reading reviews that the dollar is much less there. We just want to make sure we aren't overpaying by too much

10k is insane. My H and I are planning a trip to Cambodia (so, neighbor country) and we are doing everything for around 3k. Granted, H lived there for two years, so he knows more about what to do/what to skip and what's overpriced/where the good deals are at. Also, it's not a tour or anything. We are just going back, so that may be why, but regardless, your price is TOO HIGH.

Honestly, my advice would be spend a few days in Cambodia. Smiley smile

Oh, and make sure to bring appropriate clothes for visiting temples and religious sites.

1 US dollar = 35 Thai Bhat (their currency).. so $10,000 US should go a long long long way

FH and I took a SE Asia trip last year (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos) with G Adventures for way less than that. It was almost a month long. Like Alyssa said, it was a group tour, so you have that to consider if you want to look at G Adventures or other tour companies, but either way, 10K is too high for Thailand.

Oh, and I've just got to throw out a recommendation! My favorite part of our entire trip - which was amazing every single day - was Elephant Haven Thailand in Kanchanaburi. We spent a day interacting with elephants who have been rescued from the cruelty of logging or being ridden. It was incredible! Side by side interaction, cruelty free. You get to feed them, go on a short hike with them, see them take a mud bath and then swim with them in the River Kwai. Epic. (They have a larger sanctuary in Chiang Mai called Elephant Nature Park, but it books weeks in advance so we weren't able to see it as well.)

@April: They each have their charm. FH and I traveled through Europe a couple of years before our Asia trip, and we loved Europe, as well. I think you will too Smiley smile So get excited! You have an awesome adventure ahead of you Smiley smile

FH and I are going to Thailand in March. We plan to spend about 3.5 days in Bangkok and 7 in Koh Samui. Flights were about $700 each from CA. Hotel in Bangkok was $400 and in Koh Samui about $850. Also that includes airport transfers and breakfast every morning. We want some flexibility in our schedule so we are doing our planning on our own.

I think 10k for Thailand is crazzzyyyyy! Thailand is so affordable - you can find Groupon trips for 10 days for less then 2k to Thailand (not that I'm saying you should use groupon) but you can go on a great trip there for less. I would do more research.

@Alyssachu I appreciate your breakdown and I'm afraid of traveling to such an exotic locale. But FH would be all over that ish in a heartbeat. I may have to broaden my horizons a bit. Good stuff though!
