Tablecloths to the ground or shorter?

HalloweenBride, on July 24, 2012 at 8:28 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 16

So, while I love the look of the tablecloths that go all the way to the ground, I'm wondering if it is practical? Do people trip on them, get their chairs stuck on them? Things like that?

I am having 8ft rectangle tables. Haven't bought any linens yet but I was wondering what everyone though.

What did you have and how did it work out?

I have been to weddings where the TC went to the floor and it was a pain . For my wedding I ordered 108" which is almost to the floor, but just enough length. I honestly feel like it doesn't need to touch the floor especially if you are having chair covers.

    Cons

I couldn't put my legs all the way under the table.

My feet kept pulling the TC and I had nowhere to sit my purse.

I wanted longer linens because the legs of the tables at my venue were extremely ugly. However, I agree with Ranika. They can be a royal PITA. They worked very well for our buffet tables and specialty tables because noone was sitting at them.

Not doing chair covers because of budget. Which is why I was considering shorter tablecloths. I think doing long ones on the buffet is a good idea and probably the bridal party too since everyone will be looking.

Also, I was wondering what size table runners to make I bought fabric and it comes in 10 yard rolls. I have enough to make runners that hang 6 inches off the edge of the table, but then I'm left with 3ft of fabric off each roll which I feel is a waste. if I do shorter ones, that are 6 feet long for the 8 foot table I don't run into the extra fabric bits.

What do you think would look nicer?

    I'm at such a loss!

I'm doing floor length and chair covers. for round tables, it's not such a big deal with not being able to get your legs underneath, but for long tables, that does seems like a problem. for long tables, try getting ones that hover a little and try pulling it down in the front so it's even shorter in the back. hopefully any decoration on the head table will keep it on there. if not, get table clips!

Well people will be seated on both sides. I'm not too concerned about the head table, more so about the other tables and the 100 guests that may or may not be tripping on tablecloths!

Ours went to the floor, and it was a pain in the neck. I saw lots of people stepping on them, even me and Mister had issues with it. If I knew then, what I know now..I woulda got shorter ones

I think for rectangular tables, shorter linens are fine.. I don't think that people tend to get stuck on them..

We are using shorter linens, as our venue charges an additional $8 per table for ones that go to the floor.

I plan on getting the floor length only because i want to cover the table legs. I'm also doing the chair covers...We will just have to see how it goes.

I'm going to buy my linens. It's cheaper to buy them than rent in this are and I'm just going with black. And those were the places I was looking! The table legs are a little ugly, they're heavy duty folding tables, which is why I'm on the fence about it!

Below is a picture of the venue with short tablecloths. I guess I can't really see the legs to be honest, but I love how long tablecloths look. So dramatic! I have a while to decide though!

Oh yeah! I am also not doing chair covers, as much as I would want to, because the folding chairs are VERY oddly shaped. I measured the chairs and no chair cover in this universe fits them. Even the universal ones are iffy. I am doing sashes though.

We bought our linens. We bought black round 108". i figured that depending on the table size it would either be all the way to the floor, or just above and it would look fine since our runners are also 108"

Hey Shannah, I agree that the look for the longer tablecloths is always better that having short ones. But you shouldn’t make it too long. The table legs at my venue were similar to yours so we decided to go with spandex table covers and it was all wonderful.

Thanks, but I've already bought table cloths. I did by ones that go halfway to the ground, those spandex ones are expensive and I didn't really care of them either. And I had a budget, which is why I went shorter.

I've seen pictures of the venue decorated for weddings, and one bride actually taped the table cloth under the table so it looked like a tight cover, and it was gorgeous, I didn't even notice the table legs!

About 20 years ago, DH and I were at a wedding. Shrimp and cocktail sauce during cocktail hour, but they hadn't brought out napkins. DH thought he'd quietly wipe his hands on the floor length table cloth. Only he accidentally used my skirt instead! I leaned over and said, "that was my skirt." He was mortified! Black skirt, so didn't show. We still laugh about that.
