Suggestion for Wedding Dress diy

Olivia, on October 27, 2023 at 8:03 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 13
So I’m going to attempt to make my own gown! I’ve had experience making evening gowns in the past and quite frankly my tastes are expensive but I’m trying not to go bankrupt paying for my gown. While I’m planning my materials and patterns out, does anyone have experience with this? Specially, where have you gotten your fabrics? I’m currently seeing a lot of Etsy. I’m specifically looking for 3D fabrics.

Amazing! Thank you - I think I came across this company before in my searches but it’s super helpful to have someone voucher for the quality. If I may ask, what kind of fabric did you order from them? Lace? Silk?

Mine was a duchess satin. I know she said she orders pretty much all her fabrics from them though, so I'm assuming the quality must extend to all types of fabrics.

There is a company on Etsy that has race reviews called Secret Spark. They have GORGEOUS bridal fabrics and if I had been as up to par on sewing a year ago as I am now I would have considered making my own dress! Big thing that comes to mind advice wise is to get a bunch of muslin and then some cheap versions of the final materials so that you can make a muslin version to get the fit, then the cheap version to finalize fit and practice finishes!!! Also, if you're making an a line- you should add pockets.

I personally would want to see the fabrics in person instead of buying them online. I suggest finding a specialty fabric store and buying in person.

Shop at local fabric stores so you can look at them before you buy. Also be aware that your time and sanity equals minimum wage per hour in addition to cost of supplies.

Hey! I'm a fashion designer and I wouldn't recommend buying fabric online. If you have the chance to go to NYC, there are so many elegant fabric shops. That way you can touch the fabrics, feel the weight/texture/color, etc. You can also bargain the price per yard down. If you aren't near NYC, I'd reccomend reaching out to some fabric stores there to have them send you some swatches so you can see in person before pulling the trigger. Good luck!! I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Oh! And I think it goes without saying but abbbbbsollluuutteellyy get cheaper practice fabric, too to create the dress originally in a similar weight fabric that you can mark up, adjust, etc. Then once the pattern is finalized you can use the real fabric! So exciting! Please be sure to send progress photos! I'm also making my dress!!

Thank Michelle! I do happen to be close to NYC, so I definitely plan on going in to look at some fabrics! Just have to find the right 3D fabrics for the design I’m looking to do. Thanks for your suggestion!

Oh, that's so great!! You'll have such a blast looking for fabrics!! Please keep us all posted! And if you are still keen on looking at the etsy ones, maybe she can send you some samples or you can purchase 1/3 of a yard so you can see and feel them! Smiley smile

Check out different necklines to see what styles bring out the best balance between your head/face and torso. You can take pictures with different tops to examine them side-by-side. Also, consider the best features of your body that you want to accentuate ... or see if you need to compensate for something you want to improve -- that can be designs that elongate your legs. Sometimes the collar will fall to one side or the other --which can be compensated in a design. In a general post like this, it's only a guess what design elements could be most helpful.

Definitely have someone else measure you, that way you can make sure it fits and you don't have to reach around too much. All you need is a friend, a tape measure (would recommend fabric- you can get them at walmart if you don't have one already), and somewhere to record your measurements (just a simple notebook should work, no need for something crazy fancy)
