Stolen Cards from Honeymoon Fund box

Clarissa, on April 12, 2024 at 12:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
MOB here. We just threw our beautiful daughter a fun and costly Western themed wedding reception. We're now finding out that a lot of cards were stolen from the Honeymoon Fund box that was placed in the lobby. I placed it there with full confidence in everyone present. We filed a police report with the city. We contacted our insurance company, but there's a $200 cash limit. Can anyone please advise us on what else we can do for the couple? It's such a heartbreaking situation. Thank you for your SERIOUS responses!

Do you actually have proof that anything was stolen or how did you find out? I would think the police would need some type of evidence.

Unfortunately, when you choose to place a cashbox in a public location, like a lobby, this is a potential caveat. It may not have even been a guest that took money – it could have been a vendor, an employee, a random patron. Future brides, this is why card boxes should always be placed in a highly visible area inside your reception space, or direct guests to gift cards to an appointed person (a parent, close friend, bridesmaid, wedding coordinator, etc.).
OP, since you have filed a report with the police department, and have notified the insurance company, I don’t know that there is much else you can do for the couple, aside from offering to replace the missing funds yourself.

Unfortunately, if you actually labeled the box “Honeymoon Fund” it put a target on it for theft. Not only would that directly solicit money from guests, which is a no-no, it would draw extra attention that there was likely a lot more than just well wishes inside. Personally, I don’t like card boxes on both accounts. We had a designated loved one collect envelopes and periodically deposit them in a safe, locked place.

I would contact guests and have them cancel any checks they may have written. Beyond that and reporting the theft I’m not sure what else you can do,

My daughter began writing out the Thank you cards already. We began tactfully asking around and a lot of cards had cash. If you're getting married, keep the money box near you at ALL times!

My daughter had begun writing out the Thank you cards. Almost all cards were cash. Sent out mass email.
