Standing for the Bride?

Nelia, on December 20, 2023 at 4:49 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6

Why do guests and everyone at your wedding ceremony stands for the Bride? Where did this tradition come from? My future husband wants to be traditional and not see me in my wedding dress or veil until i am walking down the aisle with my dad. I have been to multiple weddings in the past and every time the bride walks down the aisle everyone stands for her, I am traditional in that respect, but I do not like being the center of attention. My fiance said to feel like a princess, it is the one way I can be the center of attention. For those of you newlyweds or brides to be, how do you feel about having everyone stand at your wedding ceremony? I just feel extra nervous because I had breast cancer at 29 years old and my ballgown wedding dress will have a pocket made for the strapless part of my right side since I wear a breast prosthetic and I did not opt for having breast reconstruction surgery. I will be 34 by the time of my October 2024 next year, I love LOVE my wedding dress, but I am worried people will notice the prosthetic.

It’s just a respectful thing, really. (And a chance to crane to see the dress! 😆) Traditionally people don’t stand until the mother of the bride (or someone filling that role) stands, so if you’d rather people not stand then just make sure that person stays seated.

Hi there. Just wanted to add, your alterations person should make you feel beautiful and comfortable, and they will offer solutions to shape a dress* for prosthesis or lack thereof. You, yourself, can also purchase easy double-sided tape for any gaping that may happen during dancing. This has been a reliable go-to for many who wear strapless or single-strapped dresses. Best wishes.

They definitely have been ! I meet with my seamstress for alterations in June of 2024. I have told of her my concerns about getting my prosthesis to fit right , and they assured me they will make sure I am comfortable and beautiful 😍. It’s just me . Some of the people at my wedding next year know I had cancer in 2020 , but some didn’t know I had a single mastectomy. So it’s just nerve wracking for me . My future hubby said I will look beautiful in my dress and no one will care expect me and him about my breast form . If I had breast cancer later in life , maybe I wouldn’t be so self conscious lol 😂 I love my wedding dress though , it’s just when I tried it on over the summer when I said yes, to my dress, I totally forgot about having a prosthesis and felt beautiful and like a bride , not a cancer survivor. Thank you so much ☺️

I think you will look lovely and I understand the privacy part. And just for stories sake, because we all have stories, I know several persons who've had single and bilateral mastectomies without reconstructive surgery. Why not-- I don't know, because i don't ask about stuff that's not my business. Should you encounter anyone who does bring it up at an awkward time, you can always reply, "oh, I want today to be about much more than my surgical history" and smile.
