St. Lucia or Jamaica?

M&SC, on February 21, 2016 at 12:17 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

Has anyone stayed somewhere in Jamaica or St. Lucia? I'm looking at all inclusive resorts & I'm hoping to get help narrowing a place down by people who have good & bad to say.

What type of experience are you looking for? I love both islands, they each have unique experiences to offer! St. Lucia is a volcanic island with lots of beautiful resorts set in cliffs with gorgeous views and Jamaica's coastline has some fabulous beaches!

I'm going to St. Lucia!! We're staying at an all inclusive built into the mountainside. I'm so excited!

Front my research, it's much different than Jamaica (in the ways Sunlit Travel mentioned). Jamaica tends to be a little more affordable though.

If you want to snorkel, climb waterfalls, swim in a luminous lagoon, I would choose jamaica! It's surrounded by reef, so the snorkeling is incredible!! St. Lucia was beautiful too of course, but I personally enjoyed jamaica more!

@Jersey Jen what resort are you staying at?

We are adventurous & want to do some exploring on water & land, but are also wanting to sip a mimosa on the beach. I've heard Jamaica has gorgeous beaches. Does anyone know how the beaches are on St Lucia?

It depends on the atmosphere you want. I've been to both islands. St. Lucia is very romantic and seclusive. Jamaica is also romantic but is very popular and has more of the party atmosphere. Both are beautiful islands. Jamaica's beaches are to die for though!

FH and I stayed at Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica last January and we loved it!

I highly recommend it if you prefer a little bit more of a party atmosphere. Compared to other resorts I've stayed on I found it to be a lot more fun.

    Also Jamaica is BEAUTIFUL!

P.S. Also highly recommend Sandals resorts because there is so much included- Free water sports, etc. They also don't allow tipping (because they pay their employees a fair living wage), which is great because you don't have to worry about carrying cash around the whole trip.

I've never had the desire to go to Jamaica. Seen someone win a trip to St. Lucia the other day on Kelly & Michael now we are thinking about honeymooning there.

FH and I are leaning towards St. Lucia, we have both been to Jamaica, so we want to go somewhere that neither have gone.

I'm in love with Jamaica! That's where we're going for our honeymoon. I highly recommend Iberostar (the highest level resort is adults only) and Secrets.

We are staying right near the pitons, a little further south on the coast. Sandals is in the north, but we wanted the mountainside view and access to hiking and excursions, which is in the south.

@Heather - "third word country" is an incredibly outdated term. We are all in one world. Countries that haven't had as much opportunity for economic advancement are not "third world," but instead developing. Both Jamaica and St Lucia are much poorer than America and both rely heavily on tourism. When I visited St Lucia and spent the day with a private tour, we saw all parts of the island, including some parts you probably would sneer at as well. However the people in both countries are amazing and welcoming. The one thing that really stuck with me was that our guide talked about how when the resorts moved into the island they had hoped with such high end options it would help locally more, but since the resorts keep a lot of that money in house by having their own tours etc the islands haven't seen an increase in revenue.

There are also incredible locally owned resorts on St Lucia that support local tourism. Regardless of where you stay, I urge people to look at TripAdvisor and book at least one local tour so you can really experience the island instead of just the resort. We had the best time on our land and sea tour.

We are going to St. Lucia! They have three Sandals resorts and shuttles so that if you stay at one, you can use all three. One of FH's gms stayed their on his honeymoon and highly recommended it.

I've been to both and think St. Lucia is much more romantic and relaxing.

(I also find the comment "third world" gross. I lived in the Caribbean and while there is poverty, crime, and lacks some American conveniences, it's not "third world.")

We did Sandals Grande in St Lucia. It was gorgeous and highly recommend. I'm biased but I have never been to Jamaica. Also there are so many different excursions. A couple we met hiked the pitons. We did snorkeling, mud bath and hot springs and an island tour on a boat. The beach at our resort was really nice too. The food was awesome and like a PP said its stay at 1 play at 3. So you can go to other resorts and explore.
