Soda at the Reception

Tamika, on July 19, 2019 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 32

Hello, I had a quick question especially for those that are already married!

We are doing a Destination Wedding and we are doing a Cash Bar; they are providing water, coffee and Tea. There will be children there but not many because it is a GetAway.

Do I purchase soda? If so, how many?

OR

Do I cancel that out and let them purchased it along with alcohol they already have to buy?

The Reception is only 3 hours.

I would be pretty annoyed if I had to travel for a destination wedding and purchase a soda. So I definitely think it should be something you provide.

I would provide sodas for guests. I don't drink much alcohol and hate coffee and tea, so will choose soda over water if it's available.
I'd say maybe 2-3 per guest if it's only 3 hours?

I think providing sodas for your guests would be much appreciated by them!

I think it'd be a nice touch. Whenever I've been to cash bar weddings soda often comes through the bar and costs money.

Okay, I was asking my coordinator at the reception if I could just put a certain amount that a way I will not be losing out on any money if a lot people do not get the Pepsi Products.

Wow, a DW with a cash bar.

At the very least you must provide sodas. Really with a DW you should be treating your guests above and beyond, but such is life...

I once travelled an hour and a half for a wedding and had to purchase soda. We left after dinner.

Honestly I don't see the big deal. But I don't drink soda, so I guess I'm in the minority with this one.

LOL, Oh no Mandi!!!! Okay that why I was asking. What are your thoughts about the Cash Bar? I don't want people do over drink and not be able to control their liquor plus its up in the mountains so that why we are doing the Cash Bar.

I think it’s rude to have a cash bar for a destination wedding. You should, at the absolute minimum, provide soft drinks.

If I knew it was a cash bar ahead of time, I’d decline going to a destination wedding. If I got there and found out it was a cash bar, especially if soda wasn’t even included, I’d leave after eating and reconsider my relationship with the bride and groom. I’m not going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars and days of PTO to not even be treated to food AND drinks at the wedding.

Oh goodness, you sound like my fiancé because I called him to get his input and he was like, "Everyone is going to be drinking and you are wasting the money buying sodas".

That is why I went on here for help.

I agree with Sarah on this... she isn't being "Something else"... she is stating correct wedding etiquette. If you are asking guests to pay hundreds, even thousands, to travel, then you should at least be providing some sort of alcohol.
