Slips and petticoats and crinoline, oh my!

Does anyone care to share photos of their dress with and without a petticoat? My first alterations appointment is coming up and I have no idea if I need one or not. This photo is the sample gown and clearly doesn’t fit, but it gives you an idea. I know that I can order one and try it on with the dress, but it would inevitably get covered in dog hair. Any advice?

Has your dress arrived yet? When daughter's came in, the attached crinoline was so much more full and starched/stiff than it had been in the sample, that it made the dress really full and she didn't need a slip at all. Good luck! Can't wait to see photos of it finished.

I agree with this. My dress hadn’t been steamed and the built in crinoline was flat so I bought a separate crinoline. I thought my dress was an A-line but after my seamstress steamed it it fluffed up! It’s actually a ballgown! Wait on your purchase until you see how your dress looks first.

It also depends on the look you want. I bought a ballgown that has two layers of crinolines. The saleswoman recommended getting a petticoat or slip with additional crinolines to poof it out more. But our ceremony and reception is outside, and I didn't want more poof and liked they way it looked without. It was also hot under four layers so I could imagine wearing more!

I liked the crinoline with mine, because my abdomen and butt are rather large. The crinoline made it look like I was trying to make it puffy below the waist, as opposed to it being just me. Comparison photos below.

The picture by myself is preceremony with a slip. The picture with people was at the end of the night I accidentally took the slip off when I went to the bathroom and couldn’t get it back on 😔
I didn’t think I wanted one and just added it a week before my alterations appointment. I’m glad I added it. It added nice volume and made it easier to walk in! I got mine from Amazon, it was cheap and shipped quickly.

The first two are the dress without. The next three are my dress with an a line slip underneath.

The 1st picture is my dress without a slip, and the 2nd is my dress with a smaller ball gown slip. (I’m planning on going bigger still). I hated the skirt of my dress without the slip when I looked back at the pictures xD
