Simple Ceremony/wedding Ceremony

Sarah, on April 16, 2020 at 3:20 PM Posted in Maryland Planning 0 4

Due to the virus I had to postpone my big wedding till July 24th but I still want to get married on my original wedding date 5/22/20. Maryland may not issue a license since the courts are closed. If I live in Maryland would I be able to get a license in Virginia so that i can travel to get married there? I am trying to change my name as soon as possible before my honeymoon cruise in September. Thanks!

You will need to get a marriage license in whatever state you actually plan to get married in.

Your marriage license needs to be in the county you are getting married in, and is only valid for a certain amount of time.

I would caution that if MD is shutting down marriage licenses, VA likely is, too. A lot of states are working in regions, to better manage restrictions and economies. However, some places have been allowing virtual and/or "drive-by" weddings, so certainly look into your local regulations.

Hi Sarah! I'd keep checking in with your county's guidelines, things keep changing really quickly and it's possible they'll have some type of virtual or appointment-only process in place by late May!

You can reach out to counties in Virginia as well, but keep in mind that you will then need to get married there like Meghan & Rebecca said. Also those counties may be prioritizing emergency situations (military deployments, severe health issues, etc), VA residents, or couples with April wedding dates first. Everything is being determined very locally and changes quickly!
