Sequin bridesmaids?

Caitlin, on May 30, 2022 at 11:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Alright, needing some opinions here. We're looking at bridesmaid dresses and one of my bridesmaids suggested everyone in sequins because I LOVE sparkles and glitter. My fiancé however thinks that it could look cheap or trashy. We're going for really chic and classy tropical vibes at our wedding in Puerto Rico in January. What are your thoughts here? I can see both sides honestly.

I think bridesmaids in sequins can definitely look chic, and not trashy, when done properly. However, when I think “chic tropical vibes”, I definitely do not think of sequins. I don’t think it would look trashy, I just don’t think sequins would really go with the overall theme/vibe/decor of your wedding.

I also think that you need to be careful with how dresses made with sequins are made, we had choir uniforms that were all sequins and the sequins would scratch and cut you while you moved around and were very itchy. We only wore them a couple hours at a time, I can only imagine what wearing them all or most of a day would be like.

Good to know. Our options are chiffon, velvet, tulle, satin and sequin right now. Looks like in June they'll have crepe as an option as well? Utilizing Revelry as our dress source

GREAT point. I always forget that some people aren't used to that! As a dancer sequins just have become normal for me over the course of my life but if you aren't used to them or they aren't the right type they can totally hurt! Maybe I'll have one keep one of the sequin dresses on for a little bit when she tries it on to see what she thinks

It’s still going to be quite warm and tropical in Puerto Rico in January, so I would definitely stick to light, breathable fabrics. Plus, those are the fabrics that will visually go with your tropical theme.

So we used all sequined bridesmaids gowns (except for my MOH, whose gown was sequin on top and chiffon on the bottom) and I absolutely loved the way it played with our tropical florals and resort (not beach) venue. A glamorous tropical chic if you will. Trashy is definitely the last word I’d use to describe it!

I just remember being super uncomfortable during the choir concerts and afterwards having all these little cuts and red marks. Definitely made me not a fan of full sequins.

Sequins can be elegant or cheap depending on the quality of the dressmaker. The ones that people complain about are low quality. However for tropical, I would not wear them. Something more lightweight such as chiffon would be better.

One of my friends did a destination wedding in Turks and Caicos and had all her bridesmaids in gold sequin and they looked amazing

I think you could totally make sequins work! I'd just recommend reading reviews for anything you're considering first to make sure you don't run into the issue of them scratching or a bunch of the sequins falling off in transit/ during the day.

I think in a tropical setting, sequins may feel heavy and itchy. I would encourage you to consider chiffon or a lighter fabric so your ladies are comfortable. You could also do separates where one half is sequined, like these: https://shoprevelry.com/IVY-Sequin-Top/
Then they could wear a more comfortable, breathable skirt.

I loveeeeee sequins. One of my bridesmaids wore sequins. Maybe you can have the maid of honor in sequins so she can stand out. Sequin bridesmaids? 1
