Seating Chart Kerfluffle

Melinda, on February 17, 2022 at 1:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Good Morning!

I am finishing up the seating charts today for our March 12th wedding since I have to turn them in Sunday.

To calm some family members covid concerns I am doing assigned tables so people can stay in the circles of people that they are always around. Our tables seat 8-10 people. I have 9 full tables right now.

I have two tables of four people- is is considered tacky to not fill them? They are two groups that I cannot put together (party group from out of state and my bosses lol). Should I keep the extra chairs at them or remove them?

Thanks guys!

Assigned seating has little to do with Covid and more to do with letting guests avoid the high cafeteria ptsd where couples and families get split up. Although, it seems very strange that the caterer would require a set in stone seating plan long before guests have rsvp’ed since those numbers could and will be different at that time.

Group people in whatever system works best. 4 people to a table is fine. I would keep the extra chairs since guests will likely circulate after dinner and mingle.

Also, escort cards are easier on guests and waitstaff than a seating poster or mirror that is difficult to read and gets congested.

All of our guests have already RSVP'd. They were due on Tuesday. Everything is due set in stone 3 weeks before which is Saturday.

I am doing it because of Covid because some of my family is eccentric about it.

We did assigned tables as well! Ours fit 8 guests and we had a few that weren't filled. We just kept the extra chairs at the table just in case. It's such a small thing that I promise no one will notice or comment on so don't worry about it being 'tacky' or anything!

This is a relief because my venue has tables for 8, but we may need a few groups of 6 or 7 here and there. My fiancé says that would look stupid, but I think it's more stupid to split up friend groups and force them to sit with half a dozen strangers! I'll show him this comment 😁

100% totally ok to have less than the max. number of people that fit at a table! Our venue told us our tables "fit" 10 but ideally 7-8 or people will be bumping elbows. Maybe for groups of 4 add an extra 2 chairs to the table? Or ask your venue if they have slightly smaller rounds for those two groupings.

Yeah it's totally fine to have some seats missing! Your guests won't remember that from your wedding day! I agree with you, it doesn't make sense to split up friend groups and people who are comfortable sitting with one another for the sake of looks. Good luck!!
