Save the Dates

That's awesome that your guests want to RSVP already, they might be unnecessary for you but they are not unnecessary for everyone.

The couple used to call ahead to announce the wedding, so invited guests could prepare and set the date aside on the calendar, long before the postcard trend started. That might be why they think they are actual invites.

I think it depends. My side of the family was very confused by them because they're all immigrants and were just like "....what is this?" Meanwhile, all of the guests on my (American) husband's side knew about save the dates and weren't confused or trying to RSVP. There was definitely a cultural difference on views of save the dates.
