Santorini, Greece

Saraí, on May 16, 2019 at 11:47 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9
My husband and I are planning to go to Greece next year and we are wondering if $3k is enough money to spend in food, tours, things to buy etc.. Has anyone traveled here before? if so do you have any tips, advice? any insight you could offer would be highly appreciated. THANK YOU!

I think as long as you budget it well you should be fine! Everything is cheaper apparently, though I’ve never been so I wouldn’t know

Yeah! we're only planning to go for a week so I think we should be fine but it doesn't hurt to ask to be a little more sure. Thank you for your response.

It seems like it should be enough. Do you already know where you are staying?

I think it’s doable but it depends what season you go— seems like lodging prices skyrocket in the high season, but you can get some great deals in the shoulder season (I see your wedding is late April, so if you’re looking at an April or May timeline, I think you’d be in good shape budget-wise)...sorry, I’ve just noticed you’ve said food tours etc— if you’re excluding airfare and lodging, then yes yes absolutely. A lot of the tours I looked at (wine/vineyards, boat, etc) seem to have a price point of around $125 pp, but I should note — we didn’t pre-book anything weather dependent (boat) and this paid off , both because the wind is temperamental and because our hotel ended up able to hook us up with a WAY better deal than I had seen online. Meals and wine tended to be very reasonable (at least for us as New Yorkers), but beware of some restaurants essentially charging a premium for location/view. One day we simply rented a car to do some exploring and that was maybe 45€ (for an automatic, 10 cheaper for a manual!) if I’m remembering correctly, so that made for an inexpensive day, and another day we did the hike from Fira to Oia so our activity of the day was more or less free (plus 2€ bus fare to get back to our town). If you’re planning on doing any island hopping, ferries/flights could add up, but I think your budget is reasonable, especially if not in the high season.

Yes I was excluding airfare and hotel from the $3k budget. We are planning to go around April-May. I guess I will have to look when is the best time of the year to go to save a little. I think we'll be okay with our budget since we're pretty good at staying in budget. Thank you so much for taking your time and explaining a little about your experience. I hope it goes as smooth as I am thinking.

End of April-May sounds perfect. We were there very end of March which I think was a little early. They were very much in prep-mode then (fresh coats of paint on everything!) but seasonal restaurants were just starting to open up then. Seemed like April 1 is more or less when everything gets going — the rainier season has ended, everyone is still perky and fresh before the late summer crowds come, sounds like the ideal time. We had nice weather even in late March, just got cool after the sunset , and especially in the breeze. 60° there felt a lot warmer than 60° here does, as the sun is SO strong (don’t underestimate this! Bring sunscreen!). I think late June-August is when hotels upcharge for crowds because they can due to demand. We really enjoyed Santorini!

Would aim to save as much as possible. There can be hidden costs like exchange rates, unexpected illness, increases in hotel rates and so on. Really depends on how you like to travel when you are abroad. Some people hav
