Royal Caribbean Cruises..Any thoughts?

FMS, the barefoot wife!, on November 19, 2009 at 12:10 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

I've been looking at honeymoon ideas to try and convince my FH to go on one! So I was thinking a Royal Caribbean Cruise, their commercials look good, the prices seem pretty decent also. Has anyone been on a RC Cruise? If so how was it? When calling to book or inquire do I mention it's our honeymoon? In hopes of free upgrades and what not, or will that just jack up the price? TIA!

PS: How do I convince my FH to go on a honeymoon? I would pay for it but can't really afford to..Trying to pay off bills..

I've been on 2 RC cruises and they are truly the best!! So much better than Carnival. Their ships have lots to do like rock climbing walls, miniature golf, ice-skating, and even surfing! Do say that it is your honeymoon so they know because you will be invited to go to a little event just for honeymooners while on the ship. My husband and I weren't sure if we could afford to go. We kept going back and forth. Then 4 days before the wedding I broke down and just booked it, and I didn't tell him. I wrote him a love note right before the ceremony, in it I told him we were leaving for a cruise in 3 weeks. My MOH delivered it to him and he was so excited! And of course we had the time of our lives.

If you book early you don't have to pay it all at once, you can make payments on it. That should help out a lot.

I've been on two cruises and it's so much fun! One was RC and it was a very nice ship. Definately tell them it's your honeymoon and if at all possible get a room with at least a porthole view of the ocean if not a balcony (although I normally love the dark inner rooms where you can sleep in late with no sun bothering you). Be sure to plan at least one dinner in the more upscale restaurants while onboard. It's about $20 per person to do that but WELL worth it. Again be sure to tell them you are on your honeymoon and get a nice table--I got stuck right next to a family with a loud toddler at dinner which I was not happy about. So much for a quiet birthday dinner...

Yes, we should go to at least one fancy dinner right? Do they still do the dinner with the capatian thing?

I was acutally looking online last night reading up about taking a cruise (for our 2011 vacation). I came across this website www.cruisemates.com it seemed to answer some of the questions I was having. I believe they had a section on what to pack.

They do have a captain's dinner but I've never gone. Do not bring too many clothes!!! You are going to live in your swim suit. Make sure to bring at least 3 suits, because you'll always have at least 1 that is wet or damp. You do not need to bring towels, or a hair dryer. For 7 night cruises they have 2 formal nights. And of course cute cover ups is a must. Flip flops and tennis shoes.

Not RC, but I really like cruises. You can be as involved, active, laid back, isolated, etc. as you want. You set the pace. I would definitely spend the money on an outside room, however. Never had a balcony, but I'll bet it would be nice.

Don't know if I would like that new boat, Oasis of the Sea or whatever. It can carry about 6000 passengers and 2000 crew.

As for dress codes, each boat is a little different. There will be info about that on the ship website so you can decide which is best for you before you book.

And call a couple travel agents who specialize in cruises. Often they know about deals not on the website, etc., but there's typically no fee to you. And they can get you the whole thing booked (flight, hotel, cruise, etc.) a lot faster than you could.

I was told that if you want something intimate to not go on a cruise for your honeymoon. Yes they are cheaper, but it is for more of a party. It really all depends on what you want. A Friend of mine went this summer and had a good time, but told me not to go for my honeymoon. It is a party for girlfriends, etc. But HEY... I might end up going on one because they are such a great deal!

I disagree. I don't find it to be a party atmosphere at all. I've been on 3 cruises all together. You can do what you want and go where you want. So depending on what you do you can make it into a big party. But for the most part there are people of all ages. And it is usually families and couples.

Thanks ladies, I don't need an isolated island, if I did go there with him I'd go insane! I would need more people around me!

Cruisecritic.com is also a very good website - regarding all types of cruises, you can also join a forum for the cruise you be on and chat w/ ppl who are going to be on your cruise.

Beyondships.com is another good website, has alot of different ships on it, and describes the ships, has sample menus.

Cruising has something for all types, and everyone. Relax and chill, or party like a rock star. Whatever your pleasure, will be your pleasure.

Don't get pack happy. If your a beach and/or pool goer then have more bathing suits than clothes , it's all you'll be wearing during the day. Don't forget a cover up so that way when you wanna stop at a shop, or go in for some food you are dressed appropriate. Wear comfy sandals or even better sneakers if your a walker and going on excursions.

As for the formal night, a lot of cruises are making it optional. So if you want to go to formal night make sure you pack one nice outfit. Although it's called 'formal' you will find that on RC & Carnival it's okay to wear a nice summer dress and your husband slacks, shirt and a tie. No suit required. However, formal night is also when they do the photo taking so you may wanna really doll up if your planning on buying some of your pics.

Feel free to send me a note if you have any other questions

My fiance and I went on a 5 day cruise to Bermuda in May with RC. I think we had higher expectations from everyone telling us how great cruises were. We didn't find the food to be all that great (especially the buffets) and we learned quickly we wanted a bit more privacy. I would suggest to do the MYTime dining if you want your dinners to be just the 2 of you and to do the sit down meals for breakfast and lunch. We also got a a balcony room which provides you with some alone time and you can get room service and sit out there and relax when you want to be alone. It really depends on the type of person you are and what type of honeymoon you are looking for. We also only went to 1 place (bermuda) but I hear going to 4 or 5 islands is great because you are not on the ship the whole time like we were and get to see many different places on one vacation. Hope that helps!
