Royal Blue March Wedding?!

KIRSTEN, on May 8, 2024 at 11:17 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 15

Hello all! I need help! My fiancé is wanting royal blue and white as our wedding colors because they are the colors of his fraternity and my sorority. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around these colors and it not look cheap and something plucked from a wedding back in 1995. Can anyone provide some picture inspo to help? Or even other colors that I could sell him on? I love the simple and chic look

I would remind him that this is your wedding, and it’s about the relationship between the two of you; not about your fraternity/sorority. If he really wants to host a party with those colors, maybe you could suggest he do that for the bachelor party. You could also incorporate the fraternity/sorority in a small way at the wedding, such as a grooms cake or maybe cupcakes in that color.

I understand being drawn to those colors and I think it's OK. Many people don't have a color palette in mind beforehand, so they pick a color of their college, favorite sports team, etc. And I do know what you mean about royal blue, it can be very bright and overpowering. From the pics I've found, it looks good when people use a slightly softer shade of blue for most of the décor and then have a few things in royal to make them pop. For example, all your bridesmaids can wear dusty blue except your MOH who wears the brighter blue. Or you have mostly white flowers, with royal details in your bridal bouquet. It's definitely doable as long as you don't go overboard with the strong colors.

Thanks so much! Those pictures look amazing! The other thing I forgot to mention is that I’m having a Something Blue Crew. What would you suggest I have them wear if my bridesmaids wear blue? Maybe a different shade?

I don't know what a something blue crew is, but it sounds kind of like honorary bridesmaids? If so, most users here consider it rude to have, because it's basically telling someone they weren't good enough to be a bridesmaid. But yes, maybe a lighter shade of blue that will look more subtle.

Wow! I didn’t know that. Yes it is but if I had to choose everyone, I’d literally have 22 bridesmaids 🥴🤣

Yeah I had the same dilemma. There are a few ways you can handle it. I decided to just have immediate family (my sister and my fiancé's 2 sisters). It's probably too late now, of course you can't un-ask people that you've already asked 🙂 As long as there don't seem to be any hard feelings! So maybe your something blue crew can pick anything blue that they want, as opposed to the bridesmaids who are matching and have bouquets.

The only thing I would change is make the groomsmen in the first picture wear navy blue instead of that light gray, navy would go better imo

I agree that it can be a very pretty color scheme (I had a similar sapphire blue), but your wedding is about the two of you, not a frat event. If you don’t want those colors, talk to your fiance about it. You should be able to mutually decide on colors. If you do decide to go with the blue and white, maybe add an accent color or two so you can make it feel more your own.

FI is wrong to push this on you if it's not your taste. If it's not two enthusiastic "yeses" then it should be a "no."

Thank you! I am not really against it; I just want it to look sophisticated and not stuck in the 90s.

He's not pushing. He brought up the idea. I am wanting for both of our needs to be met. I don't hate the color; just what I've seen hasn't looked sophisticated.

Well, I did a similar blue, white, and silver, and I thought it looked very sophisticated. Other accent colors you could you might be a dusky pink or a lighter shade of blue.

I agree 100% with Andrea and Kirsten. Andrea couldn't have phrased it better, "This is not a frat event".

Although royal blue is a pretty color, ultimately it does not match with too much because it is very bold. With this in mind, maybe a compromise is to have the dance setting/lighting of the night be predominantly blue. This is a more "natural" feel in terms of setting up the party vibe, rather than taking center stage as the decor.
