Rescheduling our wedding - Any advice on weather in Sept in St. Pete/tampa area or the Keys?

Amber, on March 23, 2020 at 6:57 PM Posted in Florida Planning 0 6

Like many others, we've had to cancel our May 2nd destination wedding in Playa del Carmen and we're scrambling to re-schedule and starting back at square one with planning. We are new to FL (currently in the Orlando area), so I don't know the weather/seasons here yet. We are looking in the areas of St. Pete beach, Tampa and/or the Keys and given the currently travel bans that effect my groom, my immediate family and most of our bridal party, I think September is the earliest we could re-schedule. I'm also planning around my brother's wedding in early October.

We really wanted to get married on the beach in the evening and we had planned to have an outdoor reception (but I'm open to having an indoor reception if necessary - I just hate the idea of a traditional hotel ballroom). Does anyone have any thoughts on the weather in those areas in Sept? (Ok for outdoor ceremony/ too hot or too rainy?) Any suggestions for a reasonably priced venue (approx. 50 guests all travelling from out of state) or vendor recommendations? I know this is a very broad and large ask, but we're literally starting from scratch and the thought of starting completely over is really overwhelming right now. I have contacted multiple venues so I'm sifting through those emails now, but I'd appreciate your help!

September is the worst month for hurricanes if you look at historical weather data, so I'd avoid then if possible!

We had to reschedule our May 30th wedding, and chose to reschedule in October instead of September (later dates were already booked with our venue) just to avoid the worst of the hurricane risk.

I don't know about beach weddings, but we are getting married at Bridle Oaks Barn in Deland which is a gorgeous barn-style venue. They're completely booked for 2020 now though.

Hi Amber! Unfortunately, I think it would be too hot for an outdoor reception during September. Average high temps are around 90 degrees, and that's not even taking rain and possible hurricanes into consideration. Maybe consider moving it to November if possible? That would bring the average high temperature down by 10-15 degrees.

Fingers crossed for you to find the perfect place and time for your wedding!

Hello. Sorry I am not on this site often these days. As others have said September you are dealing with the highest part of the hurricane season. October or November is best or even December. Tampa/St. Pete has tons of beautiful beaches that people get married on. If you have not done so I would make arrangements now as many brides have postponed for the fall. I put a deposit down on my cake place early because they advised about this so start booking vendors asap. Good luck.

I agree with the others. Its so hot in September. You may want to look towards end of October and into November unless you decide on a reception venue with ac.

Hi Amber - my wedding was scheduled for May 2 in the Florida Keys (Islamorada) and we've postponed to October 17. Mine is destination as well. The good thing is the weather in the Keys is pretty consistent! It usually stays within 70-90degrees but the humidity changes and obviously there is hurricane season to deal with. From what i've read, hurricanes are most likely to happen in September so we avoided that. My venue only had one saturday left in October or November so we snagged the October date. The weather is still warm even through december/january. We are definitely having an outdoor ceremony AND reception regardless of what month it is! Happy to answer any questions you have!
