Rehearsal Dinner Cancelled - Covid-19

Amanda, on April 1, 2020 at 12:01 AM Posted in Parties and Events 0 2

Hey guys! I need some advice here! My wedding is July 4th and we decided to postpone till next Spring. My FFIL is very sick with cancer and so his parents can no longer commit to paying for a rehearsal dinner that far out. Then my fiancé is having some financial trouble because his income is reliant upon his corporate housing company - which is taking a loss right now. Anyways when I called the hotel we booked the rehearsal dinner at to cancel (two days before the next deposit of $1,250 is due) they told me we owe 70% of the food and beverage minimum. So I owe another $1,100 on top of the $625 already paid... I stupidly signed the contract for the rehearsal dinner because my FMIL couldn't figure out how to e-sign and his parents are refusing to pay the remaining cancelation balance due and are blocking the payment on their credit card. I feel so stressed out!! If we credit the deposit to May the rehearsal dinner estimate is $5,000+ and we don't want to be on the hook for that. I also don't want the hotel to take me to collections over something I was never supposed to pay for in the first place! We also have a room block - 15 rooms booked with the hotel currently which we were going to move to May. What advice would you give? Should I be worried?

Thanks guys!

What is the cancellation policy? When I charge people initial deposits they are not refundable if the person cancels. However, you have not yet paid the second deposit which I assume is to secure the actual preparations which means nothing has been purchased for your event. There should be a cancellation policy for each deposit. If they wanted more to save the date they should have charged that amount initially. Also check out what regulations have been put in place due to the pandemic. You may not be liable for any late payment fees if you do not pay right away. This will give you some time to decide what you want to do.

    Hi Amanda,

Congrats on your engagement! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, and I know the uncertainty is super stressful! You are definitely not alone.

I agree with what Samantha said above. From what I have heard, a lot of vendors will allow you to move your date with no charge. However, if you are canceling, there will be a fee for this. Definitely read the fine print of your contract!
