Registry - Silly China Problem

Tiger Bride, on January 9, 2021 at 9:38 PM Posted in Registry 0 9

I want to preface this by saying I know this is a small and silly problem, but...

I understand many people these days don't register for fine china, but I've always wanted to have "the good dishes" for hosting holidays, and so I made sure to register for a set I liked. And I REALLY liked them - simple cream color with a scalloped edge and gold rim, by Lenox. This was in 2019.

In early 2020 I noticed they had gone out of stock at BBB, and I asked the consultant, who told me it was likely they were just on order. Coronavirus came, we postponed the wedding, and I found out my pattern was not on backorder but discontinued. By this time they had sold out from the Lenox website...had I known, I would have bought them...

I tried to see if I could build my own set from eBay, Replacements etc., but I couldn't find the pieces I needed. After a lot of searching and comparing I found a different pattern, which I grew to like as much as the first. I went to add it to my registry, and finally take off the old ones, and now THAT pattern is out of stock everywhere as well. I spoke to Lenox and they have told me that the pattern is not discontinued and will be restocked, but they don't know when.

My bridal shower is next month. I'm torn between selecting a third pattern, which I don't like as much, and just not registering for dishes and buying #2 myself when (if?) it comes back. Or it could not come back, and then I'd have been better off settling for the third pattern...

What would you do in this situation? Did you have a china pattern you really liked?

We picked a plain white set and no one got them for us. I didn’t love them, i didn’t hate them. They were just plates. We would have used them as everyday plates. So that just being my experience we had them, and no one bought them.

If you really love these plates you could always let your hosts, mom, bridesMaids etc. know that you want them and if anyone asks them about a gift they can share about the plates and let them know gift card to BBB (?) would be helpful so you can get them when they come back in stock.

BBB was one of the places we registered at, and their stock has fluctuated like crazy over the last year in particular. We didn't register for china, but a lot of things I was bummed to see out of stock have come back.

I'd maybe just leave #2 on your registry and see if it comes back in time. If not, I'd try to wait it out to buy yourself since it's not discontinued.

We didn't get much from our registries because we didn't have a shower and downsized our wedding, but there are things that I would still like to buy myself and am patiently waiting for them to come back since I spent so much time researching and selecting them, and am pretty picky. Trying not to settle if I can wait it out!

Are there other department stores in your area that sell china? Nordstrom, Macy's, etc that you can see if they have a pattern you like just as much? That is frustrating falling in love with something that is out of stock and poor communication to boot.

Try looking for the dishes you love at local goodwill or thrift/second hand stores.. you might be surprised u may find some pieces there

I'd leave #2 on the registry, but also look for a third as a backup. I've heard rumors that BBB might be going out of business, I don't know how true it is....BUT that might be why they've been kind of all over the place. Maybe find a similar style? My mother had the same issue with her Christmas set, she got like a base set of stuff and then they discontinued them. My uncle likes to go tag saling and to flea markets, so he ended up finding pieces here and there and now she's got more than she needs! But of course, you don't really want that for china for a wedding.

Personally, I would look for a third pattern. I think if set #2 is back in stock, you could return set #3 for gift cards and then spend the money to buy set #2. Maybe check the return policy before deciding, but I hope that helps!

I have looked everywhere! Lenox, Wedgwood, Royal Copenhagen, you name it. Seems like everything these days has a paint-splatter look, or is "contemporary". The ones that are older have really intricate patterns, which isn't me. Just a simple gold and white.

My #3 pattern is Lenox's Federal Gold. It's definitely classic, just didn't strike me as much as the others did.

Unfortunately it isn't just BBB as Lenox themselves is being kind of wishy washy on if/when the plates will come back. I'm not opposed to secondhand pieces, but unfortunately the two patterns I like were only in production for a few years so finding used ones seems unlikely.

I plan to use these plates for all holidays, and augment them with Lenox's Christmas pattern. At least THAT won't get discontinued!!
