Reception Playlist

Ivy ORP, on July 29, 2019 at 11:29 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
We decided to forgo the added cost of a DJ and I just finished the final playlist!!! I'm so happy with how they all came out and have been jamming to the reception playlist at work all day. I also have one to play while guests arrive, another for the ceremony itself, and a third to play during our cocktail party reception before the dancing begins. We will have a little bit of everything (except country) and I am so excited to see our guests enjoy what we have chosen for the day. The added work will be so worth it!

I'm not going to lie, it took several attempts to get it just right. I was afraid I would be sick of the songs after hearing them over and over to make sure the order was just right, but now that it's all in the right order I'm thrilled to play it on our day. We also added "marker songs" so we can seamlessly incorporate speeches and the cake. We know which songs are good break songs so it doesn't feel awkward to stop the music. We're also not having a designated parent/daughter dance but included songs we think our parents might want to dance to with us. I'm sure yours will work out too, just choose songs that you like and are crowd pleasers too.

That's good idea! Just curious.. How do you plan to manage the guests without a DJ?

Since our reception is cocktail party style we can play the background music while everyone mingles and noshes. I built in extra time if we're into hanging with our guests but have a marker song that would make a great last song before toasts and speeches before our first dance. I have a separate playlist for that and we plan to simply encourage our guests to join us during the second song that also means a lot to us before the dance music kicks in. We are skipping parent/daughter dances for a couple of reasons. My son picked a song he's willing to dance with me to but we're not announcing any of it. We are skipping bouquets and garters so no tossing to be had. We have another marker song that is the perfect way to get everyone gathered before we cut the cake. We're planning to Rick roll everyone, stop the song and get on the microphone to make a joke like "Don't hate us, we have cake!", or something like that. Since we're renting our beach house venue for the whole weekend we're not doing a send off. We also plan to do the cake toward the beginning for any guests that may need to go after a couple of hours. (Her dad!)

Same here, a friend of ours is a musician so he has lots of equipment. All we need to do is create some Spotify playlists and hand over some notes.

Good luck. I'm sure it will be great. My biggest recommendation is to listen to the songs in order to make sure the flow feels right and there aren't any problematic lyrics you may not have noticed before. No need to scandalize grandma before cake. lol
