Puerto Plata or Punta Cana?

Andrea, on July 12, 2019 at 9:25 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 13

Is there really a difference with these two locations in the DR? They both look nice from pics, but Puerto Plata seems slightly nicer.. but I don't know if that's just how I'm perceiving it. Anyone ever been to either? FH and I are considering either DR, Cuba or Jamaica. So hard to make a decision.

I haven't been there, but I have been to Jamaica.. we went to Iberostar Grand Rose Hall Suites.. I want to go back. We are going to go on a mini moon and then save to go somewhere next year Smiley smile I highly recommend the resort if you're considering Jamaica. It is adults only too and you can access the other resorts on site.

Puerto Plata is on the Atlantic and Punta Cana is on the Carribean. I've been to Punta Cana multiple times, and will be going back for our honeymoon really soon. I've read that the beaches at Puerto Plata are rocky and you need water shoes, but things like windsurfing are better there. I also am unsure on how many resorts are in that area. All the ones I know of are in Punta Cana or La Romana. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. We are going to be staying at Excellence El Carmen in Punta Cana, and the resort looks breathtaking.

There is a travel warning on the Dominican Republic at the moment. Do as you wish, I just want you to be aware. 😊

I have been to Puerta Plata! It was a great vacation! All inclusive. We went to Ocean World one day. A shopping excursion another. And went on an AMAZING catamaran snorkel tour too. Where were drank champagne on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean, snorkled at a little island with crystal clear water, toured the mangroves, and had lobster on the beach. It was TOTALLY worth the $139\person excursion price! I have also been to Jamaica which I LOVED too! Went parasailing there and climbed up these beautiful not too steep waterfalls. I have heard Punta Cana is nice too! Where ever you go definitely try to get an all inclusive deal. Ours included alcohol too!! 😁❤

The DR, Cuba, and Jamaica all have the same level 2 advisory. As do Mexico and the Bahamas. Most Carribean destinations have a level 2, and have had for years. This advisory is due to the general crime rates and suggest one proceeds with caution. They are unrelated to the recent media coverage in the DR. The FBI is investigating the hotel deaths, but the US has not put out a travel advisory based on these incidents.

Yeahh, I noticed that as well, but wow most have had the same level 2 for years? That I did not know, I suppose because I never really tracked it. Thank you for the info, it's good to be in the know!!

If you're American, Cuba will be difficult. Which is too bad b/c it's amazing. There are some resorts there, but if you're going to go, you should go to see the country itself, meet the people, etc. My family went for my grandfather's 85th birthday in 2016, and absolutely loved it. We stayed at a small hotel in Havana, but stayed at casas particulares everywhere else.

Hey Aliza, I'm from Canada, HAHA.. but yeah that is unfortunate though... in terms of Cuba. It's so nice that you enjoyed your time there in Cuba for your grandpa's birthday, so nice!!

Puerto Plata! I used to live in DR and always visited the northern coast. Everything is more laid back and calmer.
