Priest/pastor/ordained minister

Kyra, on August 19, 2022 at 10:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Has anyone been able to have a priest/pastor/ordained minister officiate their wedding outside of a church? We aren’t avid church goers(both baptized) and wouldn’t want to have to go through pre martial counseling, but it’s really important to FH family that we get married by an official of the church.

I’m not sure where you’re located, but we were in the same situation and hired a pastor through “The God Squad”. They operate in a handful of states. My wedding isn’t for three more weeks, but we’ve already met with our pastor and chatted with him several times and are very happy. https://www.godsquadmidsouth.com/

It looks like unfortunately they don’t operate in our state, we’re in maryland!

Have you checked with your venue? Our venue was able to recommend someone (an Episcopal priest as it happened) who would give us the religion-adjacent ceremony we were looking for, but not require premarital counseling (and not make our wedding into a sermon).

We are having a friend do our wedding, so it was pretty easy. I think the Church of Universal Life ("those guys on the internet" who ordained Joey on Friends as well as our officiant, and myself from doing another friend's wedding) has a directory. As an episcopal affiliate, they're all about free and fair access, so you can probably find someone through them.

The only people I know who were married by clergy outside of a church wedding had to go through premarital counseling. Hopefully, Becky or Doug's advice pans out and you can find an option that works for you! Both sound like good avenues to look into.

Have you checked the officiants in the vendor area of this website?

Your choice sort of depends whether you are looking for a strictly Christian minister -- for those you might call Baptist, Methodist, Presbytarian churches. You may check for (or ask about) the county associations if they exist for that group. Community churches (and maybe megachurches) may have something to offer.

Not us personally, but my husband is a pastor and he does weddings outside of the church. Unfortunately we're in Ohio and can't help you out. But call around. Your state should have a website where you can look up ordained ministers.
